Worth upgrading a Socket 1155 CPU

Bought a computer from ibuypower years ago. Hard drive fried. Just looked at the mobo, and its a socket 1155. Not sure what CPU I have in there at the moment, but it is at least 3 or 4 years old so I imagine its pretty slow as compared to what is out there today. Any reason to try and upgrade it given that socket? I would guess based on what limited info I've seen is that 1155 is dying and the future for Intel is sockets 1150 (and more so 1151?).

You dont need a hard drive to check the CPU. Just power it up and look in the bios. It will tell you what cpu you have. We kinda have to know that to know if it is worth upgrading.
 
1151 is the future but if you have an i3 an i5 or i7 could provide a boost. The new processors are faster but not by as much as you would think.

1150 is already end of the line.
 
Both 1155 and 1150 are "dead" actually (they won't get any more CPUs going forward). Find out your current CPU from the BIOS and tell us what you use the computer for.

"pretty slow as compared to what is out there today"?? No, not necessarily. I've got an i7-2600K that I bought when it first came out in 2011 and is still more than fast enough now, particularly OC'd to 4.2 GHZ. So everything depends on just what processor you have now. In a system such as mine, if the only thing wrong with it was a bad hard drive, then I'd just buy a new drive and call it good.

If the "hard drive" in question is an old fashioned spinning disk drive, the biggest "upgrade" you could make for a general purpose system would be to replace it with an SSD. Over the last few years, SSD's have been the biggest difference in perceived speed and responsiveness of any component in the system (perceived meaning how it feels to use it). I know at work, I had some 4 year old laptops that people were complaining about (in terms of feeling slow) and after I swapped the disk drives to SSD's they felt like new machines in comparison.

If the system was feeling fast enough for what you were doing with it at the time the drive died, then just replace the drive other than if it was a spinning disk, get an SSD instead.
 
I'm in the same boat. I am down sizing to a ITX build but I have a 2500k and 2700k cpu. Is it worth it buy a new socket mother board or just look for a used z77 its board?

You can save anywhere from $100-$120 buying an i7-4790k vs an i7-6700k. Basically enough to cover the cost of a decent midrange Z97 motherboard. The savings keep piling up if you have DDR3 RAM to recycle to a new build. If you're the kind of person who keeps a PC for four years or so getting an 1151 CPU, motherboard and DDR4 RAM really isn't going to benefit you that much. Until the stock of 1150 i5 and i7 processors thins out and the price jumps I don't see any problem recommending them. You could put those savings into something useful like a better GPU (or your pocket).

Of course if you wait another month it will probably be a different story and the 1151 platform will be the only game in town.
 
True. But by end of line I mean no new processors. 1151 should get both kaby lake and cannon lake. Ofc, in 4 years we will probably be on to 1152 or whatever successor socket there is with the processor after cannon lake.
 
I really think the value of the G3258 is overblown... but YMMV. Not that's it's not a bad processor, but it's not All That and a bag of chips.
