I got a Celeron 2.5ghz 775 and was thinking about going to a P4 2.8Ghz 775 I think the P4 is 800mhz and 1mb. The Celeron I am guessing is 256k and 533mhz? I have not been a Intel guy for many years until I bought a C2D. I got the celeron in a backup rig and figured I'd give Intel some love for the next 2-3 years or until AMD become top again(price/performance) if ever.

All the PC will be used for is basic stuff with little to no gaming with Vista and 1gb memory.

BTW will the P4 run on 533mhz DDR2 or would I need 800mhz DDR2? If thats the case I guess I am stuck with the Celeron as I don't want to buy new memory.

Memory support is dependent on the mainboard support for asynchronous bus speeds, but generally yes you can use different speed memory. I assume you're sure you have DDR2 and not just DDR.

For general usage, it probably isn't really going to be a big performance jump overall, but there could be some individual apps that see improvement. If it's cheap, go for it. Vista itself might see a difference from the increased cache.

Someone offered the P4 for my 18x Samsung burner and 256mb PC133. I figured I could probably sell/trade the Celeron and get the burner back.

I'd say go for it, but those P4 520's go for under $100...pc133 is not cheap anymore.

edit: I use the same cpu in a rig combo'd with Kingston 1GB PC4200(533) and it flies..rips music/movies very fast..

well I have no use for PC133 anymore. To me its worth about $10-$15 tops and I can find it used for around that I am sure.
