Worth The Upgrade?

I've been thinking about upgrading my computer for a while now. I want to get a new motherboard, processor and some RAM. My current setup is as follows:

AMD 850mHz Thunderbird
Gigabyte ZX-1 Motherboard
512Mb of PC100 RAM

I have been thinking of upgrading to this. I don't have a lot of money so I can't go to far ahead

AMD 2500+ Barton
Abit NF7-S V2.0
2x 256Mb of Kingston HyperX PC3200 or Corsair XMS 3200

Does that sound like it's worth the money?

Either way, it's most definately worth the money. You'll be blown away with the 2500+ (that will probably reach 3200+ speeds no less) compared to your current system.

The approximate total from newegg is a little over 300 dollars. I wanted to get a high quality motherboard and ram just incase I wanted to overclock but I will have to wait until I get more money for a better HSF. Thanks for the opinions. So I will see quite the improvement from the two systems? Will it be a waste since we are on the verge of new technologies this year? I'm just curious because my 850 is starting to lag behind and I want to be able to play games on as little money as possible. Thanks for the opinions

looks great to me
if you want to overclock that kinda setup should be fun
but even if you don't overclock that system will stomp your old one

i give it the thumbs up

Don't be afraid to test the system out with the retail AMD HSF. Many of the 2500+ chips are able to hit 3200+ speeds with stock voltage (or slightly above) and you'd be fine to run it overclocked as long as your temps stay reasonable (around 50C, under 55C) until you get a better HSF.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Once I do go about doing it I might try overclocking with the stock HSF. I would think it would be better than the stock one I have with my 850 cause it runs idle at like 52C with case sides off lol It's run this hot for the past 4 years and still runs excellent for what is inside this POS box... .Thanks again and if you have anymore please let me know

Check your power supply rating. Anything less than 300 watts won't work well. Newegg has refurbished ones pretty cheap.
