Worth the upgrade?

Is it worth going from a P4 2.0a @ 3GHz to a P4 2.6c.

The 2.6c probably won't be O/Ced for a while.

Is hyperthreading hype?

Need to know, what the experts think.

yeah, it is worth of upgrade but you have to change your board and also your ram if you don't have quality PC-3200 or above rams.

I have a gig of Geil Golden Dragon pc 3500.
I have a P4PE.
It'll support a P4c

The P4PE line will support the P4c chips with the latest bios.
The fsb will go to something like 230

I say save your money as well. 3Ghz is plenty. You wont see that much of a difference to warrant the trouble and expense...

Hypertreading actually is not just hype. Whenever you see a benchmark against a AMD Anthlon 3200 and a Intel 3.2 HT proc...it always wins once Hypertreading is enabled....bastards!

Hyper Threading owns. I ran 2 quake 3's and ran timedemo on both of them at the same time, and i got 200 fps on each one, with a GF4 MX 440. Good game.

Not ALWAYS... only certain programs can take advantage of Hyper Threading. More will in the future now that Intel has built it into all their processor though. Would be nice to be able to run SETI@Home constantly while I play games though =)

I vote to sit still a while longer too. If you're at 3ghz now, going to a p4c is really mostly going to buy you bragging rights.

You'll see more speed with the 800 Mhz bus... but do you really need 420 frames per second in Quake 3 instead of 400 even? That's really the only thing it'll help... if you have a game running only 40 frames per second, chances are today's hardware can't handle it... and it's not limited by your CPU. Hold off on all major upgrades until the next generation of processors and video cards come out... that's the best advice I can give people unless you're looking for a bargain, in which case, right now is one of the best times to bargain hunt... stores will be trying to get rid of their existing stock... people will be trying to sell their used hardware so they can afford the new hardware... and stuff that's current right now will be outdated very soon, which will knock the price down quite a bit.

Wouldn't SETI still take up 100% of the CPU power as that is what it was designed to do. Or could you have HT have one part run SETI and one part run games. I never got that about HT.

save yourself a buck or so. wait for next year when intel introduce Socket T so that you can upgrade that system later on if you wish.

Half the CPU would be running SETI, and the other half would be running the game. It's not a 50/50 split... to Windows, it's two processors. One will run set, and the other will run the game.
