For my hopeful setup, I have an

-AMD Athlon 64 3000+(150)
-DFI LanParty nF3 250 mobo s754(100)
-6600GT(250)

now, I can't spend any more money, but I COULD

-AMD Athlon 3200+(200)
- ASUS "A8V Deluxe" VIA K8T800(130)
-9800Pro(200)

Is it worth the sacrifice of video card? I realize I will pay ~40 dollars more with the s939 setup, but I can afford that. Anyways, any adivce is useful.

What I would do is buy the mobo and the processor first and use whatever old GPU I currently have for about a month or so. In that amount of time you could accumulate some more funds, on top of that are the inevitable price drops, and then you end up saving money. Either that or you can wait a month to buy the whole setup. I would rather sacrifice time than performance. But that's just my opinion. Good luck with the decision.

I have a laptop :( And this probably won't happen for a twp weeks, maybe three, but I need a new computer.

My current laptop:

-20 gb HDD
-8 mb Video Card
-P3 1.2 GHz Proc
-256MB RAM
-Ethernet card needs to have a butter knife jammed into the back to work
-If you close the monitor, it will not turn on unless you open the unit, and unplug a certain wite. If figured that out, even though I don't know what specifically the wire does...
-If you leave it on for 10+ hours, the screen will leak ink on the inside.

I can't really last a month+.

Your first setup looks much better. Much better video card and mobo. That mobo is a great OCer so you could easily just OC to 3200 or 3400 speeds.

Abit AX8 Via K8T890 AMD Athlon 64(FX) Skt939

Then I would buy this for $189.00
XFX PVT43GND GeForce 6600 GT PCI Express

With your 3200+. Then you have the latest and greatest for your price.

That would be extremely perfect, but is it gonna happen soon?

And PCI-E, is that going to somewhat obsolete until more technology comes out? I mean, its pretty new right? Will there be compatiblity issues with RAM and HDD(SATA), and any other stuff?

Thats the problem with newer chipsets and stuff on newer board. Thats why I choose to wait at least 6 months is so manufactures can workout the bugs and release newer rev boards. Who knows it might be virtually bug/glitch free but I don't think so.

the one with the better gpu. In anything except benchmarking, no one could tell a difference between a 3000+ and an fx55 in gaming, let alone a 3000+ and a 3200+

I would go for the 939. The 9800pro will do you well for quite a while. By the time it is usless, you will have money for a new video card i am sure.

Well keep in mind, CPU's scale in price much faster than in performace compared to video cards. A 3500+ might cost twice as much as a 2800+, but it's not nearly twice the performance. A 6800GT on the other hand would be twice as fast and twice as expensive as a $200 card. That was just an example. I'd go with the 1st setup u have there with the 3000+.

I'm just worried about future-proofing this thing. I want it to last at least a full year gaming-wise, as well as upgradeability. Don't want to buy a T1 line and see an ad for a T3 on the way home(Old Commercial, but you get the ideea).

I would recommend a Socket 939 Athlon 64 3000+.
I have mine paired with a MSI K8N Neo2 and it easily overclocks to 2.2GHz (3500+ speeds) with PC3200 RAM, and I didn't even have to bump the core voltage, passes Prime95.
With the money saved, then pair that with a 6600GT.

And what is some good PC3200 RAM for less than 75 dollars?

If you want upgradability, then go for PCI-E and S939.
