Worth the repair?

I have an HP tx1000 notebook tablet that is prone to the overheating issues to do with the motherboard and the video chip separating.

I recently fell victim to this and have been looking around online for possible solutions. I can buy a new motherboard online for around $110 and install it myself.

I'm basically just asking if this is the smart route? I can't really afford a brand new laptop right now but I could get a decent one on craigslist for around $200-$300.

Would you go with the repair or just save the money and look for something else?

Thanks

If you can then replace the notebook. Otherwise, I would recommend spending an extra $100 to have a notebook repair station do the MB replace. Notebooks are not necessarily easy to work on. If your repair fails, then you are way behind due to sunk costs.

If you decide to attempt a self repair, then first see if you can disassemble the unit (and even attempt reassembly) before you make the final decision. Sometimes just doing this can result in uncovering a problem that turns out to be readily fixable.

IIRC, nVidia 8000-series GPU soldered onto the motherboard had that issue. Didn't HP extend the warranty on those laptops? You might want to check if you haven't already.

http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/affectedmodels.html

looks like you might be able to get a replacement

Thanks for that link! So how do I become a part of that to get my repair? I noticed there is a date to exclude myself but if I want to be included do I need to do anything?

I've never handled this sort of thing before so I admit I lack even the basic knowledge of how to get what I need.

Thanks for the help everyone! :)

"The PDFs below are samples of the Claim Forms that will be made available after the Final Approval hearing. If the Court grants final approval of the settlement, the Claim Filing Period will begin, and you can return to the website to begin the claim filing process."

I would follow that site till they have the final hearing, apparently thats when they will have claim forms for you to get a replacement.

Thanks Buzzsaw13!

The only problem I foresee is providing proof of purchase. I long ago lost the reciept and the laptop was purchased from my roommate. Do you think this will be a problem in my claim?

I figured I would just call HP and transfer the serial number into my name.

the way class actions lawsuits work is, everyone who doesn't exclude himself from the ruling before the deadline is considered to be part of said lawsuit and a beneficiary of whatever it rules for.

so if a class action lawsuit said "each victim gets 100$", then you can exclude yourself to sue again, or you can just let yourself be included and then demand your 100$. you do have to fill in the forms and demand your share of the compensation though, and do so before a certain date.

Yes:
1. you MUST have proof of purchase.
2. you MUST be the original purchaser.

I figured I would just call HP and transfer the serial number into my name.
Why would they do that?

Well damn...

My roommate is long gone and I think its kinda screwed up you must be the original purchaser. He only had the laptop for a month before selling it to me and these problems didn't start until about 9 months ago.

Just when I thought I had found a solution to my problem once again HP/NVIDIA screws me.

Here are several options for you.

Repair the motherboard yourself. Takes technical ability and patience. Not for everyone. I did this for a friends DV2500 by baking the motherboard in the oven and adding a copper shim. That was several months ago and they just notified me that it's having the problem again. I sold them a Dell 1564 to replace it.

Replace the motherboard yourself. I doubt you will find a brand new motherbaord online for $110. Maybe a used or repaired board. HP charges $353.40 for a new MB through their parts ordering site.

Find someone on ebay that does the repair and send it to them. Prices vary. Be wary of the lowest price offers. It may be some joe blow in their basement using a hairdryer to reflow the solder. The list below is sorted by "best match".

Buy a new or used laptop and sell the tx1000 for spare parts on ebay. You might get some of your money back.

I recommend this... fixing it yourself is fun, but if you don't enjoy amateur electrical work then its better to just declare it dead and move on.

Get a decent second hand laptop, it's just going to die a similar death if you replace the motherboard.
