Worth selling a Opteron 165 setup and going to AM2?

I am toying with the idea of going with an AM2 setup. I'm currently using a 939 setup with a Opteron 165 clocked at 2.6GHz on a MSI board with 2GB of ram. I have a local offer, that probably won't last long, to buy my CPU, board, and ram for 375.00, which I think is a pretty darn good offer. I see the AMD X2 6000 should be in the 200.00 range on Monday, it's advertised right now at Fry's with a motherboard for 230.00

Of course, I would have to buy DDR2 ram, and a decent board. So I figure I would spend 75.00 over what I get for my current setup for the X2 6000, a good board, and decent ram. Or do a Intel setup for more dough. What do you guys think? It would be kinda nice to have a 3 GHz CPU, but maybe not worth the trouble just yet.

I probably already know what you guys are gonna say. If I want to overclock, go Intel. If not, do the 6000 X2

Thanks

I would sell it and hold the cash until the Intel price drop (two weeks) and then buy an Intel system. The 3GHz X2 performs pretty much in-line with the 2.4GHz Core 2 but has no overclocking headroom. Since you already overclocked your Opteron, overclocking a Core 2 shouldnt be much of a problem.

Edit: Meh, if you want to go AMD you should go for it, and run it at stock, since you're not likely to get much more out of it, anyway (increasing vcore to get ~200MHz is not worth it IMO). Just remember that your system WILL be slower than an overclocked Core 2.

That's probably good advice.

I'm surprised to see the FX-60 still sell in the 400.00 range on a certain auction site we all love. It will be interesting to see the socket 939 parts prices in 2 weeks.

I would wait until P35 chipset and penryn come out. 45nm SSE4 and a number of other improvements. Also, it seems to me that the current Quad cores run pretty hot at this point

From a performance standpoint, I don't think it's worth it. You won't be getting much of a noticeable performance boost from the upgrade. After the Intel price cuts on April 22, you can get equivalent or slightly better performance (at stock) or much better (overclocked) performance on the C2D platform.

Of course, if you are just upgrading to AM2 to tide you over until K10, then that is a perfectly reasonable reason to do so. However, K10 is an unknown quantity at this point, and despite all of AMD's claims we still haven't seen one single benchmark and don't know how it will compare against current C2Ds/C2Qs, nor Intel's upcoming 45nm Penryn shrink.

I currently have an Opty 165 @ 2.6GHz. I have contemplated moving to a C2D setup, but to be honest, I don't really see the point of moving from one dual core platform to another one this close to the release of quad cores at a reasonable price. I'm going tosit for a bit and pick up either a quad core Intel or AMD when they're in a decent price range, not the current Intel "Q" quad cores either, which are essentially only 2 C2Ds slapped together, much like they did with the 8xx and 9xx Pentium-D procs a few years back.

If someone is offering you that much on your hardware, take it.

I would go with a 3600+ and overclock it like crazy, just personally. Then you could buy an 8800 or something with some of the cash you will save. :)

I would sell it, buy the C2D 6600 in 2 weeks, overclock the crap out of it and buy a 8800GTS\GTX.

Defanetly dont pass up the chance to sell your old hardware for that NICE OF A PRICE

you won't be able to give that hardware away in 6 months

P.S but if you dont sell it, and need someone to give it to in 6 months, I'll take it ;)
