Worth replacing skt 754 sempron with Turion?

I currently have a sempron 2800 oc'd to 2.4ghz, soon to be watercooled passively (should be finished by next Wednesday) but I would like a little more power with less heat. I've heard the turions are low heat but still OC well and run cooler than semprons, is this true? Also, would i even notice a change if I got one OC'd to the same level? I do game on my current setup, older games mostly (EvE, Thief 3, etc), but I do a lot of work in GibbsCAM, would I see any improvements in that? Thanks :)

I wouldn't use turion unless it's for a notebook. When you overclock, you lose the low power benefits and face the same overheating possibilities as with any cpu. For the same money, I'd go for a dual core and new board.

Ok but are they compatible o 1die? i too have a socket 754 board. I have the DFI Nforce3 250Gb board. this was perhaps the best OC and stable s754 board ever made. i currently have it with a 3700+. but just for curiosity would like to know if we could slide an X2 Turion in there.

Your DFI supports it. But I don't think you'll see enough benefit to upgrade from a 3700 to the turion. If you want a spare cpu, then it wouldn't hurt. You'll need an aftermarket heatsink designed for it. Only a few work with it, and you'll have to search the forums for recommendations.

the X2 Turions use a different socket and are not compatitble with Socket 754 motherboards.

I myself have done exactly what you're talking about, and the difference is honestly noticeable. My old setup was a sempron 3100 at 2.7Ghz via the DFI NF3 250GB, and I was still hindered in gaming. I presume it's the 256k cache. I then switched to a Turion Mt-32 25w 1.8Ghz (and later a Biostar Nforce 4 6100 Matx - the best 754 IMO), OC'd to the same 2.7Ghz and now the difference is like night and day. I don't know, I guess the Sempy's are just turds. I can't really comment on heat, but I still think even overclocked you're using less watts, which equals less heat. My turion has 512k cache, if you choose one with 1Mb, the benefits will be even greater. Also if you purchase an MSI mobile pad from MSI's website for $10, you can use any HSF...it's worth the money.
