Worth making my next build SLI ready?

I'm looking to build a dual core system and need to decide whether to make it SLI ready or not any imput would be appreciated thanks.

Can you afford the best of everything? Then sure.

Otherwise a faster CPU, 2 GB RAM, fast HDs (raptor 150 for game installs), and a 7900GTX or X1900XT are all better ways to spend the $70.

You'll benefit now from the above, while SLI ready to "future proof" yourself might not ever give you any value.

I personally don't think SLI is worth it. The way it generally seems to work is:

- You buy two video cards, run them in SLI
- They're the bees knees... for a while
- New video card comes out that is equal - or superior! - to your SLI rig in every way

That hurts my feelings because I don't have unlimited funds to dedicate to my computer. If I did, I'm sure I'd have two 7900GTXs in SLI right now, along with an FX-60 and 2 gigs of low-latency RAM.

The rest of the system is:
An Opteron 165
2GB Corsair XMS RAM
Fortron 450 or a 500watt psu if I decide to use SLI.
Mobo is dependant on whether I want an SLI ready system, but looking at Asus mobos.
Looking at another X-Fi sound card.
edit: I plan to overclock the opteron too.

True True

Also from knowing a couple of peeps who went this option
1 You either go SLI right from the word go
2 Or it never happens.

Not necessarily!

I have the DFI LanParty SLI-DR that I picked up last August, along with a solo 7800 GTX.

I am building a computer for a friend of mine, and am going to give him the 7800 GTX, a MOBO and a power supply in exchange for a brand new 7900 GT.
I ordered that, then got the go-ahead from the wife to pick up another 7900 GT and a G5, because I've been so good lately.
So on Monday, I'm going to have a nice lil system upgrade. A 7800 GTX swapped out for 2 7900 GT's in SLI.

Yay me. Never thought I'd get a SLI system. Never know what you're going to get in the future.
