Worth it to use dual monitors if it's WS LCD + ~19" CRT?

I currently have a 2005FPW which is fine but I've come across some CRTs and can probably grab one for free.

The thing that caught my eye first was two Viewsonic P810s (21") there! There was also a few fairly good size ones... probably 19" and 17", as well as a bunch of smaller and older crap ones. None of them were flat screens, and some were probably dead or about to die, but I know there was at least a couple of fairly recent and good quality 17-21" models.

The problem with something like the Viewsonic P810 is it is 71 pounds!! My desk should be sturdy, but it is pretty messed up and the particle board is shot, so I'd be worried it might collapse the desk. So I might lean towards a 17" or 19", but I'll have to see.

Assuming I could get a 19" or 21" that is in good condition, is it worth it?

One might say "of course!! it's free dumbass!", but you know, I don't want to take a monster CRT home and find it worthless, and be stuck with it. The reason there are all these CRTs available to me is they are getting picked up for recycling cause the place doesn't want to pay to dispose of them.

Considering a 19" or so CRT wouldn't line up at all with an LCD, and would be different resolution (1360x1024 or 1600x1200 vs LCD 1680x1050), is it still good for use as a second monitor? I primarily play games, but do just about everything on the computer like programming, a little bit of graphics editing, etc.

Can't beat free . . . or a second monitor.

Viewsonic CRTs are know for high refresh rates at max resolutions - 90-100MHz. At 1024x768 it's outrageous - probably something like 160MHz.

Yeah I know, my old Samsung 19" (which kicked major ass and still does to this day) was huge. I guess my desk has enough room... I'd probably need to add some sort of support for any large CRT though! A collapsing desk would likely ruin my LCD at the least!

So I guess I should go for it. I'll pick out the best looking one I can find @ work tomorrow! :)

I glanced at some of the stuff there this morning, and it looks like there might not be any 19" CRTs. A couple that I thought might be 19" are actually 17" Viewsonic G773 and 17GA which only have a max resolution of 1280x1024 @ 65 Hz, so I'd be stuck with 1024x768 on a 17" in order to have a 85 Hz refresh (a must for me). I like 1360x1024 anyway. But I'll have to look more closely. My old 19" could do up to 1600x1200 @ 85 Hz, and had a max res of like 1920x1440 or maybe it even was 2048x1536, so that seems kind of weak for a 17".

Anyway, is there any problem using Nvidia nView with my LCD and CRT, which are different resolutions and aspect ratios? I mean, could it even span my desktop across both displays with this difference?

Now that I think about it, a good sized CRT would be great for new games that have no chance of running smoothly @ 1680x1050 with my "slow" 7800GT.

you could ... but nTune is a hell of a lot quicker and more flexible
-i love that SW ... makes CCC look like Beta SW
