I just bought a set of Boston Acoustics BA790 Digital speakers (awesome sound quality, BTW), and I have a Sound Blaster Live! Value with Digital Output in my computer. I also have a Plextor drive with digital (S/PDIF) output for playing audio cd's. I've got the digital output on the sound blaster connected to the digital in on the speakers. However, I have to connect my cd-rom drive to the analog input of the sound card, because the Value edition of the sound blaster doesn't have S/PDIF input, only the 4-prong analog connector. Because of this, Windows Media Player/Winamp cannot perform digital playback of audio CDs.
My question is, would it be worth the roughtly $40 difference to upgrade my card from the Value edition to either the x-gamer or MP3 version to get digital playback of audio CDs?
