Worth it to upgrade now?

How worthwhile would it be to upgrade now from my current rig (Athlon XP 1700, 768MB PC2100, Nforce2) to maybe a Athlon64 3200 (waiting for the Venice or San Diego)? In the past year or so, I haven't been gaming much at all, but I do want to do more video/audio encoding in the near future. I have also considered using this as a HTPC in the future, so gaming on my big-screen (51" RP CRT, HDMI input) is also possible.

Upgrading to an A64 3200+ now will not be a wise decision for A/V encoding when Pentium Ds are just around the corner. You really want dual-cores for encoding work, as they are the apps that tends to benefit the most from dual-cores.

Gaming-wise the video card will be the most important factor, and any fast P4/A64 will suffice for overall gaming performance.

My advice is to wait for Pentium Ds to hit the market, or A64 X2s if you are patient enough.
