Worth it to upgrade from X3-720 to X4 955?

Hey all, im debating upgrading from my trusty tri-core phenom2 X3-720 (6mb cache) overclocked to a respectable 3600mhz, to a quad core phenom2 X4 955 (8mb cache). I'm sure the x4 will do 3700-3800 overclocked, but is it worth all the trouble? i

n all the benchmarks @ stock speeds the x3-720 is only a few fps beneath the x4 955.😛 If i bought the x4 955 used for $140, sold my X3-720 for say $90, its a $50 upgrade. but is it worth all the hassle? Will i notice much of a diff from the extra core and the extra 2mb cache of the 955?

thanks in advance for any feedback.

Unless you are going to be using it for something that is heavily multi-threaded like video encoding, save your money for a better upgrade in the future. Also, you don't get any extra cache. Their caches are quite the same: 512KB L2 per core, and 6MB shared L3.

I have the 720BE completely stock besides the cooler. I am running with a 5850 on 1080P and haven't had any problems with max settings.

The 720 should last you till the 6-cores are cheaper. Bypass the 4 cores and go straight into 6.

The only move you should be thinking about is an x6, for an extra hundred instead of fifty you double your core count.

I'be been using an OC'd 720 @ 3.4Ghz for a while now and was wondering the same thing but the X6 is the only really logical upgrade at his point unless you get an SSD. That really makes a major differnce in performance and you can get a good one for just the OS and apps and keep all the other stuff on regular HDDs.

save your money and skip the 6 core 1055 junk and wait for a 6/8 core Bulldozer. A 3 core cpu should be good for gaming for another 9 months.

If you need to upgrade , get a new gpu ,that would make the biggest difference.

thanks for all the replies folks, didnt know the X3 & X4 had same cache, good to know! I'll wait for a 6 core bulldozer then.^^

As for the SSD upgrade, i definitely wanna go that route for my next upgrade, but my games are all on Steam & are over 200gb, so would it be worth it to only buy it for my OS? Games will hafta go on the normal HDD (caviar black, still kickass drive but nothing compared to SSD). Would i notice a diff other than OS load times?
