IE, so that I can stop carrying around my two mp3 players, discman, palm 3xe, ti 85, etc. and get a subnote? I'd just auction off whatever I can and take the profit+extra money and buy a subnote. I'm getting tired of carrying around ten pounds of gadgets with me to class.

thinking one of these

My two biggest problems are cost/thefts and portability (can't carry it without a bag like my palm)

I'd be willing to spend around 1k or so. So that Sony 600 mhz celeron one would fit my budget.

If you can spend just $309 more you can get about 2 times the machine in the IBM ThinkPad T20 for $1,309:

IBM . Sony
14.1" . 10.4"
Pentium 3/700 . Celeron 600
internal DVD . external CD-ROM
1024x768 display, TV out . I don't know
Windows 2000 . Windows ME
Weighs more . Weighs less
No Rebate Hassle . $100 Rebate Hassle
12GB 10GB
built-in 56k/NIC

That's A LOT more machine for only $309 more. What do you guys think?

not really.. i have a subnote.. aren't as convenient as a mp3 player etc:p battery life stinks compared to those little devices.. u gotta boot.. etc:p

rossman, thats way bigger and heavier.. :p subnotebooks are tiny.

oh yea, not sure if those models have a network connect. actually mines a z505 series.. so its like a small notebook, not sub. :p friend has a sub.. the keys are a tad too close together for my taste. mines like 3.5lb:p

If he's getting a laptop he might as well spend a few hundred more, add a few inches and a few pounds and get something with DVD.

:p

it depends, i got the z505 because its like an inch thin and light, but still has a 12" screen. the subs are even smaller. the z505 is sometimes still a pain to carry and its only 3.5lb, a normal laptop with dvd etc is more then twice as heavy.

You can't beat a graphing calc sometimes, same with the palm. The size and easy access to your tools is nice.

And, if they get stolen, they're cheaper to replace then a notebook

Actually, for me I'd prefer to have smaller size over a more powerful unit. I already have a nice desktop so I don't need too much additional hardware. Thanks for pointing out that rebate though, I didn't notice earlier.

Matlab (engineering math program) supposedly beats the crap out of any graphing calc. I haven't used it much myself though. But yeah I will loose some portability.

There are graphing calc programs that do what my ti-86 does, but my graphing calc is soooooo much more portable. I'd take the portability over a laptop with matlab any day

Well, except that I also carry a palmpilot, MP3 player and/or a cd player along with the TI-85. Suddenly, all that stuff isn't so portable anymore. All the functionality of the above devices can be replaced with a single machine.

btw, i bought the laptop for that reason, thinking it would replace my pda etc.. hahaha that didn't last long:p laptops are for typing reports and programming etc... other stuff less convenient.

RossMAN, that thinkpad is an awesome deal. Too bad I don't have the extra cash for a cool toy like that.
