I have a laptop with a 2ghz a64 3200+. The 2.6ghz a64 4000+ procs are available, which would increase my laptop's horsepower by 600mhz. Would it be worth the upgrade? Would the upgrade be noticable? Most importantly: will Half-Life 2 run faster? :D

I wouldn't bother, unless you can get the new chip really cheap. You're likely GPU limited anyways.

Yeah, that's pretty much the only downer of my laptop - 64mb 9600. Oh well, I'll just invest it in a really nice 7200rpm hard drive :)

Here's a good review @ Tom's about the latest and fastest 7200rpm mobile hard drives.

You could also opt for more ram as well if you only have 512mb. I can't vouch that that will help you out as much as the hard drive, however do what you can to get the best out of what you have. Sucks about the 64mb 9600 though. That'll definetely hold ya back.

Nah, I've got 2 gigs of ram; the machine flies already. Only thing holding it back, aside from the low vram, is the 4200 hard drive. OTOH, a new model of my laptop is out with more vram and a better video card:

would you be able to put that much of a faster CPU in your laptop tho? I'm thinking of possible issues such as mobo support and especially cooling

pointless unless you just got a new chipset

edit: I'd look at a SATA 5400 or 7.2k rpm HD upgrade

Yes, it will take it. It's basically the same processor, just a higher clock speed. They're selling the new ones with the 4000+ chip. But as fire400 said, kind of pointless unless I get a new chipset. Gateway won't sell me the motherboard to the new laptop, either :p

Nah, no point. It's in a laptop, for one thing; for another it wouldn't offer enough of a boost. Even if I did get a 200mhz increase, that's still not a lot; plus I don't have a lot of cooling options in such a compact enclosure.
