Worth getting Canterwood ?

Im in the process of building my own system and have a question.

Do you guys think its worth paying the extra for a canterwood mobo and cpu or do you think i will be better off putting the cash id save by buying a 845 chipset towards a better graphic card (like a ATI 9800 Pro)

I mostly use my system for web and games so proably dont need to fastest system on the planet.

Thanks

At the current prices, not at this time.

I think your instincts are the correct one to go with and get a nice 845 chipset motherboard and 9800 pro.

You could always go with AMD and save money.

Maybe Granite Bay (I7205)will be better thn an 845 Chipset, i might be wrong tho.

I remember when everyone was all excited about Granite Bay and now it just died off.

Edit: I'm waiting for Canterwood too. The upgradeability might be worth the money right now.

Mid May last I heard. My hope is that more motherboard makers will use the CSA method of adding gigabit ethernet support by then, cause the Canterwood is 50/50 on actually using that feature (based on what I read in the motherboard forum).

Wait for the i865PE. The i865PE has got to be significantly cheaper (ie $150ish) and that is much more plausible than the i875P and there should be practically no performance difference.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll try and resist buying stuff for another month 🙂

On a related topic, does anyone know when Intel will release more canterwood 'compatible' chips ? I read somewhere they were going to do it but I cant remember when they will be out.

more 800 MHz chips are going to come out at the same time the 865 chipset it released, based on the old rumors of digitimes.com
