Worth getting a 533 P4?

I was looking at getting a new CPU but I am wondering if getting a 533 would be worth it since my mobo doesn't support an 800MHz bus. The mobo is a Gigabyte GA-8IHXP. It's a very nice motherboard and I still have RDRAM. 640MB infact. If I replaced the mobo I'd probably have to replace the ram too. In that case I'd be better off going AMD. I really don't feel like building a new computer now though. Just want some extra speed. I am currently running a P4 1.6 @ 2.1GHz. Would upgrading to a 3GHz P4 at the 533MHz bus be worth it? Thanks.

Technically, that would be a 3.06GHz with HT. In that case, yes, it would be worth the upgrade.

However, you could probably get equal or better performance by selling that pricey RDRAM-based combo and going AMD.

I think the price point might be a 2.8 533mhz. It's $50 less than the 3.06, and to me, would still be a worth while upgrade.

if you can't sell the setup then just get a 3 ghz.

that should hold you over until the second half of next year when they have dual core cpus out

I would get the 2.8. I don't think the 3.06 is worth $50 more. HT doesn't help much with games if that is your thing.

I'd say wait for the next Intel price cut. The 3.06 GHz should drop by ~$40 while the 2.8 GHz will drop by ~$15. Thus there won't be much of a price difference between the chips. HT is definately worth it just for everyday tasks (suppose you play a game and the virus scan kicks in - huge impact on performance if you don't have HT).

I am just hoping to speed up application response time. I don't play games much. I haven't read up much on HT but it should help with that correct?

HT will help alot when you are switching between programs, so you should get the 3.06 then. When is the next Intel price cut?

The board does support hyperthreading so I would go with the 3.06Ghz for it. It would likely be difficult to sell that 640MB of RDRAM, so might as well make the best of it. I still have 2 PC's running 1.6GHz p4's with rdram, and both at 2.1ghz.

Yeah that P4 would be a really nice upgrade for you. I would do it. You can sell your old chip on the FS forums and recoup a bit of the costs. I just priced the 3.06 and it's around $300CDN, which is a decent price for an intel P4 at the moment.

It would surprise me if they drop. I bought a 3.06 for the exact same board you have and the place where I bought it has actually raised the price by a few dollars. Intel announced the other day that they will stop selling 533 mhz 3.06 cpu's later this year. Being that that chip is the top of it's line and is the max for a lot of motherboards, my guess is that the price is going to stay level and eventually creep up, as the supply thins out.
