Worth buying a PS3?

I'm not a big console gamer, I currently own an xbox360 (first model), a ps2, and a 1080i TV. The only console game I've been waiting for was FF13. I went ahead and pre-ordered the X360 version, but I saw some shots and I think the ps3 one looks nicer. At the same time I'm showing my GF FF10 and some older ps2 titles and started lookign into actually buying a PS3.

But I guess only the first couple revisions of the PS3 had backwards compatibility and the new slim ones basically have none. So $300 for a bluray player (I have one in my HTPC though I never use it) and one game doesn't really seem worth it, especially since my tv doesn't do 1080P anyway.

I kinda have it figured out already unless anyone can tell me a good reason to get one. I'm picking up the game tomorrow. :)

As a rule of thumb, you should buy a console based on the exclusives and what your friends have (assuming you want to play online). I had an Xbox and decided to get a PS3 (thanks to my wife for getting it for me for Xmas!) for a couple of reasons:

1. I wanted the BR player.
2. I wanted some of the exclusives (God of War and MLB: The Show).
3. And most importantly, I was tired of dealing with hardware issues with my Xbox and hoped to eventually buy all new games for my PS3.

This kind of flies in the face of the advice I gave above, since my brothers and most of my friends only have Xboxes. I am on my fourth or fifth one and am tired of dealing with the issues, so I hope to eventually relegate my Xboxes to media extender duty. (Yes, I have two Xboxes; I bought a Pro on closeout for use as a media extender in another room).

Sounds like you made up your mind, so unless you have any interest in Infamous, Killzone 2, Uncharted 1 or 2, Ratchet & Clank Future, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo 5, etc. besides just having the better version of FFXIII then you already know the answer.

You can always do what I did and scour Craigslist for a backwards-compatible model, although I'm discovering that you do need some additional dongles to make the experience completely seamless (i.e. memory card transfer or controller compatibility) and those dongles are pretty hard to come by outside eBay.

FWIW, I'm pretty pleased with the purchase even considering that all I've got so far are the original Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank. I'm not planning on going heavily Blu-ray, but there's no denying that the bonus feature presentation (at least on the Pixar releases) really blows away their DVD counterparts.

For FF13, I believe the PS3 version is supposed to be superior, isn't it? Also, Versus is only for the PS3 AFAIK. (I don't like or know anything about FF by the way, so this might be wrong.)

The 60gb, the 20gb, the older 80gb, and the older 40gb models had PS2 functionality. The 60gb is the best console in my opinion with the most features, and that would be the one to shoot for. Not all PS3 games do 1080p, and the ones that do are upscaled sometimes, so 1080p shouldn't be a killer.

i didn't know the PS3 came with an internet browser before i got it.

so for a short time while i didn't have cable or satellite TV, i was able to use my PS3 to view streams of whatever I felt like watching.

an added benefit i didn't know existed until i purchased...

The PS3 has the strongest exclusives of all three systems (IMO). It is also my favorite system, and gets the most of my playtime.

However, if none of the PS3 exclusives interest you, then there isn't much reason to get one.

Like already mentioned, if you aren't buying it for the system exclusives there's really no point. If there is a difference in the cross platform titles it's usually pretty minimal and not worth the investment in another console.

I bought a PS3 for Demon's Souls first and foremost, but I also use the Blu-Ray player quite a bit and now have some of the exclusive titles, Uncharted, Infamous, MGS4, so to me it was well worth it.

I use my PS3 for streaming of Hulu and Netflix (mostly Hulu) and it awesome. I have a few games but don't really play them.

Uncharted and MGS4 were amazing though.

Blu-Ray 1080p >>>>> DVD 480p

Even if you only have 1080i. :)

But if that's not important to you, then I'd go with what Mindcycle said.

A multi-platform title that's slightly better on one platform is not enough reason by itself (for me, getting FF for the 360 later today).

If another price drop hits it, may get one to complete the triad (or if I luck into any extra money). There are exclusives worth playing, but not worth it to me to pay $299 for at the moment.

a standalone bluRay player is less than $100 easy now, so you'd only want a ps3 if you specifically want the gaming functionality. from what you've said, it doesn't sound worth it.

I'm a bit confused by this.... I have a 60gb PS3 (fully backwards compatible). My sixaxis controllers work perfectly, and the only dongle I needed I believe I bought at best buy for not much money (granted, this was a while ago now, i doubt they still sell them as not many consoles have BC now).

As far as new savegames, however, you don't need any sort of adapaters, it just creates a virtual memory card on the hard drive that you swap in and out via software....very seamless IMO.

I did end up just picking up the 360 version. I have a bluray player in my HTPC already so that's not an issue.
