Worth buying a double layer DVD burner ?

Hi
I am about to get a LiteOn DVD burner and Newegg has the 8x burner for $79.00 For $99.00 NewEgg sells the Liteon 8x double layer or for $99.00 they sell the Liteon 12x burner.
So, should I get:
1. Liteon 8x for $79.00
2. Liteon 12x for $99.00
3. Liteon 8X double layer for $99.00

Thanks

dvd burner is quickly dropping down in price, i say if you must have it now just get 79.00, there's a flashhack that lets you do DL but no dl media as of now so pretty much useless until much later...

I concur!

DL burners are so close in price that I don't see any reason not to spend the few extra $ to buy a DL over a SL burner, as for blank media, only time will tell 🙂

This is only if you are really looking into not buying a liteon.
Okay, so from what I've heard, one of the best dvd burners around are the NEC 2500A. Not only is it dual format, you can get the firmware updgrade that will allow you to do dual layer
I would definitely look into this.
Its only like 63 or so dollars from newegg.

Take a look at double layer vs upcoming developments at CBSMarketWatch

As a cheapster I'd get the $79 drive, it will burn a 2hr movie in 15min, the other in 10min, little difference compared to the preparations.

$0.02, maybe less
🙂

Get the Liteon 812s and you can EASILY flash it to a 832s (The dual layer 8x). So for under $70 you get a dual layer 8x burner! Trust me on this one, I have one in my rig now! w00t!

Just checking. Has it also been tested with actual DL media and it works?

If so, cowabunga...

DITTO!!!

WHY you ask?

Because...

firmware is the software, burner is the hardware... buying 832s is like putting windows xp on a similar hardware machine.

What about this unit? It's on one day sale today only for $71 at Newegg, but I don't know the drive.

Save your money, buy a $40 one on sale. In 12 months when dual layer media is cheap and the new burners are burning 8x or 12x dual layer speed you'll want to buy a new one.

Right now it's mainly 2.4x speed with 4x speed just getting going but media is still $10 compared with .40 cents.

Speed:

2.4x: 8.5g @ 47 minutes

4x: 8.5g @ 30 minutes ?

8x: 8.5g @ 15 minutes ?

When I can burn 8.5 gigs in 15 minutes and the media cost less then a dollar then I'll grab a dual layer burner 🙂

Got myself Sony DWU-18A, flashed it with the ROM from Lite-on 832S and now the drive is capable of burning DL @2.4X

And the drive came only for $75. I do not think that i will be using the DL recording in the coming months, as the media costs a lot.
But then who knows, if your friend comes to you with a DL media and asks you to burn tons of data, you know that your drive is capable of that, even though it will take 45 minutes.

go for the dual layer = twice the storage space or wait until xmas (hopefully someone will release a faster dual layer burner and by that time dual layer discs should drop in price).

hi
can any one tell me what is this "flashing?" i.e converting a dvd writer into a dual layer dvd burner????
i got a pioneer dvd burner 4x and my machine is reasonably faster, can i transform it into dual layer layer burner???
thanks in advance for the advice
ann

hey easyvg, have you tested that ? im going to say obviously because of the speed you posted = thats an awesome mod.

annie = flashing = you have a burnerA (single layer) and the newly released burnerB is a dual layer writer. you acquire the rom coding from burnerB and you flash the chip within burnerA with the burnerB coding. considering its compatible and will work.... other ways are to get technical and swap out chips. have you ever heard of flashing the bios chip in your pc and or chipping an ecu in your car? its something like that....

My feeling is, DL discs are $10 each, unless you really need to be able to store 8.5GB on a single disc, then DL is basically useless for mainstream usage. If you want to backup movies, you can always use a ripper/re-compressor, and fit it onto a single SL disc, or a pair of them if you really want the extras and stuff. But by the time that DL DVD media becomes cheap enough to be competitive with SL, then Blu-ray SL media will probably already be available, and cheaper, price-per-meg, at the same time. Costs for making SL Blu-ray and SL DVD media aren't much different, but costs for making DL media for either, are quite a bit higher. Plus, I don't really know if I trust DL media all that well yet. There are still enough issues with burning SL DVD media reliably today, nevermind faster SL or DL media.

What they mean is upgrading the DVD burner with different firmware. Some firmware is crippled to turn off some features. I believe the Pioneer is actually using the NEC chipset but I'm not sure about the older models.

Need to know what model is actually installed in your PC?

Might be a dumb question, but I'm just not sure =P

Is double layer disks the cds that you have to burn two sides? (i.e. burn side a, take the cd out, flip it, then burn side b)

thanks.

No, you don't burn on two sides. Here's an article that explains the process:

BTW, welcome to AT vknid
