Worth an Upgrade or Stay put???

Ok, I have an MSI K7T Pro (6330, KT133) mb, and a 600 duron with 256k memory. I have considered getting a 1g duron (hope it will work w/motherboard) or posssibly and 1.3 Tbird. Or maybe I should just stay put and upgrade both the cpu & mb in 9 to 12 months when I have some $$$. I think I can get the duron for about $50. Any thoughts - Thanks!!!

I don't do a lot of gaming, but have started to record and play video and thought the speed boost might help.

I think the upgrade to a 1 ghz duron or 1.3 tbrid would be worth it. I just think you need to update the bios to get suppport for the new duron.

It all depends, I just upgraded from a ABIT KT7A w Duron @984, 256 Sdram for the reason that I could sell it and replenish "Da Mothership" cheap. Don't really need the performance, but I sure enjoy it.

I like when I can replace the whole lot, that rather than just bits and pieces over a period of time, I want to FEEL it cranking! I'd wait if I were you and just try to clock every MHz out of it

I think you should just upgrade both. Get yourself a motherboard that supports DDR and SDR along with a new CPU. This way you can upgrade your memory down the line as well. Or, upgrade the CPU now. Then, upgrade the motherboard. Then, upgrade to DDR.

Might as well stay put for now and save up the $600-$800 or so to built a completely PHAT rig all at once. IF you are going to do it, do it right 😀

not a bad idea but an Athlon would help in what he is doing know ...prolly need a fatter HD tho. pr0..uh...😕 video files and music take up rooooooooom heh...

upgrading just to go from a 600mhz CPU to a 900mhz CPU is not that worthwild right now. If you save your money, further down the road you can get a new mobo and much faster CPU for not that much more, and it would be a major imporvement in performance. My 2cents.

Thanks for all of the help. Still not sure rather to go for the duron or stay put and upgrade both, might just stay put.

As a rule of thumb I don't upgrade unless I can get something double the power/speed/capacity. That used to give hardware a good 2 year lifecycle, lately thats reduced to about 6-12 months 🙁 I might start upgrading when I can treble the power/speed/capacity.

Good rule of thumb, something I usually use too, partly depends what the motherboard is capable of though. What is the KT133 chipset capable of (ie is it 133 MHz FSB or 100? - I'm guessing 133). Anyway, why can't you upgrade to an Athlon XP? That would seem a good choice, and would last a good long time. If you can't afford one now, it might be worth waiting until you can, since the SSE instructions might be useful for some stuff. Potentially the Duron 1.2 could be a good choice as well, since that has the new core.

Wait, and go all out for a DDR motherboard and an Athlon XP. The difference will be extremely noticeable, and the upgrade will go far longer before you need to change it again. Buying a 1Ghz Duron now will leave you hungry for more a lot sooner.

I'm pretty sure that my mb will not run an AMD XP. I think I could run a 1g duron (morgon) with a bios update. I think the idea of waiting and upgrading both for a noticable increase is the way to go. The $50 for the duron just sounded pretty easy. Thanks!!
