I came across the absolute perfect part-time position at this small company. The company is small but very hard to get into. I've already sent them my resume and cover letter on Friday night so they haven't seen it yet. I'm sure there will be massive competition just for this one spot considering that they have advertised it on major job boards.

Out of curiosity, I ran a search for people that work at this company on facebook just to see what type of position they hold and where they went to school.. I've never met them but would it ruin my chances to send a private message to 1 or 2 of these people and show genuine interest. Possibly they could be good friends with the hiring manager or they might put in a good word for me or am I smoking crack to think that this would actually have any bearing on who they interview?

What do you mean by "this company is hard but very hard to get into"?

To these people you're nothing more than a random person on a social networking site. I don't think it's out of line to contact them, but I doubt they will have any major impact on what decisions human resources makes.

A nice follow up call or e-mail to make sure they received you information and express your interest is a far as you should go.

That is kinda weird, and I would probably NOT go down that road. Had you contacted a person or two first and mentioned your interest, they may have seen $$$ in the form of referral money and offered to help you out.

i say go for it. nonchalantly of course... if you dont get the response you want then just lay off. you should always do everything you can to get a job... sometimes there is overboard but for the most part you want them to KNOW you really want to work for them

1) throughly research the company
2) come up with some genuine questions
3) email the said people in that company
4) good luck

that should be the proper way to do it. actually i'm going to email some contacts i have at JPMorgan as well and ask them about asset management (and they are mostly I-Bankers). it doesn't hurt to show genuine interest and i'm sure they'll help however they can.

always make sure your emails are nicely-written and free of errors. keep it formal.

did you know that less than 10% of openings are filled by online job postings? most are filled by employee referrals and internal promotions.

btw facebook was created for that exact reason: building social networks.
