Another variation.

What game needed a sequel, got one, and it was a disaster? Maybe Franchise-killing?

I know some will say Civ 5 but I don't agree so don't list it.

Again I'll start with a list of likely nominees.

- Dragon's Age II (I haven't played it much but based on a lot of feedback)

- MOO 3 (same)

- Diablo III (same)

Not thinking of a lot for the list yet, but I think there are more.

Possible nominee: Total Annihilation, with the sequel Total Annihilation: Kingdoms

Master of Orion 3
Civilization 5
Diablo 2 (I know, I'm one of three people who didn't like it)
Supreme Commander 2
Battlefield 3
Final Fantasy 8
Duke Nukem Forever

I've heard Fallout 3 doesn't do the series justice, but I haven't played it yet. I bought it over Christmas, but haven't been in the mood to play it.

Every Railroad Tycoon game since the original, with special mention to Firaxis, because although Railroads wasn't officially a sequel, it was so god awful it needs to be called out.

That I've personally played, Civilization 5 and Dragon Age 2.

Luckily, I dodged SupCom2, Diablo 3, and I knew from the start EA SimCity 5 was going to be horrendous.

FO3 wasn't the same type of game as FO1 and 2, but it wasn't a bad game. If you got it turn stable anyway. And New Vegas was better to FO3, plus there's more Fallout titles coming. Not a series ender.

Dragon's Age II (disapointment, but not as much as D3)
Diablo III (holy hell this disappointed me alot)
Fallout 3 (I wanted a turn based one, isometric view from above like Fallout I&II)
Railroad Tycoon II (follow up to "Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon Deluxe")

Diablo 2
Final Fantasy 8

O_O
I liked Diablo I as well, but common.... Diablo II was epic.
Final Fantasty didnt turn bad until after FFXII.
FFVIII was actually pretty decent (epic soundtrack), although not as great as FFVII.

I can't agree about Fallout 3 -- sure the Bethesda story was weak as usual, and it wasn't 2D isometric. But it still did a good job of bringing the FO world into 3D with modern graphics and was a lot of fun to play.

It also led to FO New Vegas, done by Odsidian (ex-Black Isle staff) which had a much stronger story and great writing for some of the vault sidequests.

It became a first person shooter game (with a few small RPG elements)....
instead of a turn based RPG. = killed game series for me (and many others).

I bought it and played it and was disappointed.

Everyone seems to love Diablo 2. I can't remember one thing that I liked about it. My friends and I played the crap out of Diablo 1 and we got back together specifically to play Diablo 2. None of us liked it. I tried to go back and play it and it's just... not for me.

As far as Final Fantasy 8 goes, it was just painful to me. I didn't play 9, but 10 was playable. I still think that 6 is the apex of the series. 7 was close.

Oh, let's not forget the RPG series final entries - Ultima 9, Might and Magic 9... Wizardry 8 seems a bit better.

I felt Fallout 2 and Diablo 2 were pretty lame as compared to the originals in those series.

In the end, I warmed up to them by having more exposure to them... but I will always regard Diablo 1 and Fallout 1 as the far superior games.

Wing Commander V - The bug hunt. I really disliked it after all the other Wing Commanders. I hated the main character and I hated how they killed Blair. There was a lot to like about the game, but there was also just a lot I didn't. It was a let down after the epic III and IV.

IV and the final sequence in the assembly hall against Tolywn was awesome.

When you play through these games you see where Mass Effect pulled a lot from for their story elements on the ship. The ending of IV however is what the ending of ME3 should have been with the player's choices and the choices throughout the game actually meaning something and determining if you win or fail.

I believe Ultima 8 was considered a failure as well.

Final Fantasy went downhill because they tried to hard to make the later games not like the original games. 1-3 were similar, 4,5,6 were not that far removed from 1-3. Then 7 was similar (except 7 jumped to 3D, but overall the gameplay was the same, but the story was not the wizards/dragons fantasy). At 8, they tried to do something different. At 9 they went back to the old ideas. From 10 on....it just..well was different. It was no longer Final Fantasy, just another role playing game.

Diablo 3 by a landslide. Such a rotten turd.

Groove man I'm not trying to bust balls, I like to understand this stuff. Didn't the super colorful world set alarms off that something may be amiss? Did you feel something might be wrong but ignored it because it's Diablo? I'm wondering

I was a huge fan of RTCW: Enemy Territory, the WW2 team-based FPS. Terrific and fun gameplay, huge community and free. They came out with Enemy Territory - Quake Wars and it killed the original and then evaporated. I realize its of competitive space with COD and Team Fortress and BFx, etc.
