Worst ghetto in the country?

Denver Harbor in Houston is a pretty bad area. That may be part of the already mentioned 3rd or 5th ward's though. I'm not sure. I just know one time I took the bus going the wrong way and it ended up stopping in Denver Harbor. It looked like a cross between Lebanon and Calcutta. Very scary.

Most of Houston is really nice and safe though.

Alright...so what do you guys think is the worst ghetto in the country? Not whole city, just single neighborhood....worst I've been in is south Reading, Reading as a whole has among the highest per capita murder rates in the nation, and a piss load of drug dealers, and most of that takes place in south side...I'm sure there's worse though.
i thought that d.c had the highest murder rate in the country?
edit for not seeing correctly:
per capita may be right....

Uhhh...maybe you're smoking some of the crack they sell about two blocks from where I'm typing. I live here on the South Side, a block north of The Robert Taylor Homes. It's interesting; we'll be up at 2 or 3 in the morning, and hear shots being fired outside. This year has really been a winner, though. At the beginning of the semester, a guy was shot, ran across our campus, and died on our baseball field. Back in October or November, we were drinking outside, and Public Safety drove up and told us to go inside our house. They said CPD had cornered 3 armed men about 2 blocks south of us, and were afraid they might come north. The South Side sucks.

Heh, I used to work (and probably will again this summer) in Southeast. Definitely a scary place, even in daylight.

Yea the guy next door to me lives in Chicago(north side)....he is definitely told me some intersting stories about south side.

I'm telling you...how many people can say they hear gunshots at night (and not from hunting)?

true...although I've heard some interesting stuff about Reading too. This guy i worked with at CC lives next to the Reading Airport, he said he sees drug lords coming in at night fairly often, you can tell because they come in quietly without any lights or anything at night when the airport is closed....Reading apparently is a "hub" for drug dealers from major cities along the east coast to come and "trade wares".

That's some scary stuff. I've seen my share of chromed-out Escalade-driving, Nike jumpsuit-wearing, gold chain-wearing drug dealers, too. We have a 7-11 on campus, and they come in there every so often. It's pretty obvious when a guy gets out of an Escalade, wearing an orange Nike jumpsuit, and pulls out a wad of hundreds to pay for his cigarettes.

What school? I'm not familiar with the Chicago area, but have heard a couple of stories.

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT).

Heh heh, I had a conversation with a guy that went there a few years ago. Your description sounds a lot like what he said. Like that area was a warzone and there were blocks near campus that he didn't even drive down.

Is Cabrini Green near there too? I saw they were planning to tear that down and try something else.

Hearing gunshots is bad, but it depends on how close and how often. At my last two apartments in the city, hearing gunshots at night was a regular occurance, especially in the summer. They generally never were closer than two or three blocks away (usually a little further than that), but I was living in what I considered a fairly safe* neighborhood.

*By "safe" I mean that I could walk to an ATM or convenience store after midnight without getting hassled or robbed.
