Worst Fricken Job Ever

Ok, I needed a summer job and it only had to be for a little while. I went to this new place that was down the street from me, International Buffet. They just opened and really needed help.

Things started off bad. First I was trained by a guy who didn't speak a word of English. He spoke perfect Spanish, and I had even taken Spanish in school. Unfortunately, school does not teach you that Spanish people speak faster than 1 word ever 10 seconds. At least he know the English word for fork, how helpful.

Then starts the 6 hours of boring grueling monotonous work. Take trays full of plates to kitchen, stack plates and bowls, clean ice cream machine, sweep the floor, refilling ice, etc... All the while I am being yelled at by a boss that barely speaks English even though I am trying extremely hard and its my first fscking day! I get to eat for 5 minutes and the food is incredibly disgusting. The kitchen makes my stomach turn. They have dirty buckets of duck sauce and stuff sitting out for hours and the way they clean the plates is so ineffective that you can see stuck on food. The food is prepared in greasy pans while the cooks smoke and ashes drop into the food. I have no one to talk to since there are maybe 3 people out of maybe 35 employees in the whole place that speak English and only one of them speaks it well and is my peer. So after hours of working an incredibly boring and stupid job in the most uncomfortable shows on Earth, I was 30 mins from being done.

Then he tells me I have to clean the bathrooms. Its 9:00 and the place is still open till 12:00. He makes me clean the men's bathroom and criticises everything I do until it is spotless. I have to clean the toliets and I use the same disgusting dirty sponge for the whole thing. I don't even get to wear gloves. Then he leaves me alone to clean the women's bathroom, mind you the place is still open. Of course women come in, look at me like I am a pervert and make me leave. I end up finishing at aroun 10:00 and he yells at me for taking too long.

Finally I am done, I am off. The boss winks at me and says I worked hard for the money. I agree wholeheartedly. Finally I was done. He proceded to pay me under the table (I really should report him). For 7 hours of work, I only go $40. This might be good for the slave labor he's got working in there, but I could work at McDonald's for this money. He asks me if he could put me down for more hours. I promptly tell him where he can shove his hours and leave.

Ok, I know summer jobs aren't expected to be that great and they aren't always easy, but this was insane. Most places pay aound $8 for that kind of work (at least here).

There aren't any wendy's close to me. I could probably work at CVS, that's not a bad job.

cvs will pay you just as little. Go somewhere like Randstad (or any staffing service) and ask them to find you a job, I got a great job this summer working in an office for a clothing manufacturer, started at 9/hour and I WAS up to 10.40 when I left.

Alert the health department, Call the labor board, Notify the IRS, no telling how many people he has done this to, or will do this to. If it were an American born person, and they did this, they would be in jail so fast and slapped with so many fines that the place would have to declare bankruptcy and shut down.

I don't know about your CVS, but I hear mine has a good starting salary (I think about $8/hour) and it is less than a mile down the street from me! I'd sacrifice the money for being able to walk to work.

And McDonald's would be different? I guess it would be in a way. You'd get to deal with the public. Granted most speak English, sort of... then you get to deal with their children messing up the place, them complaining even when they screw up, or even when you make a mistake once out of the 100+ people you wait on in a shift. You still get to clean the bathrooms that some jerk couldn't be bothered to lift the toilet seat when he took a piss. Or the many drunk people that come in and puke, or just plain don't care what they piss on. This the reality of retail, whether it be fast food, full service, etc. I've managed fast food for 10 years, owned my own retail shop for five years, the fact is that the public just gets worse in their manners.Get used to it.

Do I sound bitter? :)

Think twice before you shut him down...Not for his sake, but for his employees. What they have is so much better than where they came from, why ruin it? Just learn your lesson, & move on. There's no need to be a hero & bust the whole place.

Look for a better job.

Viper, that is exactly why I haven't. I am aching for that reward though (I'm pretty sure it's something like $1000 for reporting that kinda violation). The guy who trained me and his uncle are trying to start new in the good ol' us of a (how they got to godforsaken South Jersey is beyond me). I don't think I'm so souless that I would rob them of the worst job ever.

On the other hand, if he does report it, people might be spared food poisoning. Viper, have you ever eaten at a dirty restaurant and gotten sick to the point where you can't get out of bed for over a week? It sucks major ass :( I once got so sick from a burrito place that anything I ate afterward came right back up. For the first four or five days, I tried to eat light meals, but it wouldn't stay in. In fact later on, the way I got better was to starve myself and just drink lots of water, hoping to flush all the trash out of my system. In retrospect, I should have gone to the hospital. Who knows how many more people got sick?

But ltk, if what you say is true, I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be reported, who knows how many health codes have been violated. Personally, I'd prefer to have that sort of thing shutdown and have a few people out of work. I think good public health is more important than a few people not having fast food jobs. Besides, the place almost certainly won't get shutdown permanently, the health department will merely come by and tell them to clean up their act or else. So ltk, I suggest that you do tell someone, but the decision is of course up to you.

One summer a few years back (I was 18) I got some little crappy jobs, one of which involved moving dirt around in a wheel barrow. Anyway, by the end of about 6 hours I was rewarded with around $30. That was the last time I would ever do something for too little money. I worked my ass off that day, damn near broke my frigging back (moving a wheel barrow full of dirt down a long set of stairs does wonders on it). If anyone has to get minimum wage make sure that its easy as hell, or else itjust isn't worth it.

lkt007

You know what? Report that Fscking guy - its not like you will ever want him as a reference. Look at it this way: Do you really want somebody managing a business illegaly and not giving the gov't the taxes it rightfully should receive? So, you, your parents pay taxes while this moronic slave laborer does not? Sounds to me he thinks he's still in some half-baked little shanty country (no offense intended to somebody from a half-baked little shanty country), its ridiculous. And ashes in the damn food? Lemme know where to send the firebomb - JUST KIDDING!! :)

Oh i just read viper's last thread. Dammit, he spoiled my fun I suppose I agree.

Report him in. They are conducting a unhealthy buisness and need to be taught a lesson. As for the mexicans, they most likely will find work somewhere eslse.

Quit yer whinin'. Christ when I was in High School (early 70's) I worked for a crippled old neighbor that had a small farm. This guy could grow anything and I always ended up with the lousiest jobs.

Nothing like working in an greenhouse with almost no ventilation on a 95 degree day. Picking and bundling Sage and Parsely ranked right up there in the fun job department. Ah then there was mucking stalls, working the compost pile and spreading manure.

And for this I was paid the princely sum of $1.00/hour. Cash. That was $.65 BELOW minimum wage at that time but jobs were hard to come by.

So it be a hell of a lot worse.

Report this guy. You'll be doing a public service. Those conditions are unacceptable.

I think you're missing the point. He isn't complaining really that the job sucks, he is saying that not only was he paid under the table, but the working conditions and cleanliness of the place are also illegal. Its a poorly run operation. Its not a case of hating his job insomuch as its a case of reporting somebody illegally running a business, avoiding taxes and sub-par health.

damn foreigners. I say go into the kitchen with a hidden camera courtesy of the local health dept.

Don't alert the IRS though, you'll just have to pay taxes on that 40 bucks unless you make less than 4750 a year.

40 tax free for 7 hours is like 50-55 regular, which works out to be like 8 bucks.

I had a job at a deli for a year. They would make deep fried donuts, and put the racks away without washing them. So I had to clean them. They would be stacked tight together, and everytime I went to get one, they would slip out of my hands and pinch my fingers. By the time I was done, I was greasy from head to toe. I hated that job.

Brooks Apologies! You're absolutely right. You talk about being Off Topic in Off Topic.

He should report the guy, maybe a few people lose their jobs, but that's better than a bunch of people coming down with food poisoning.

If the place is that bad eventually they will run themselves out of business, it would just be ashame if a bunch of people got sick first.

From my years of experience working in food service, I'd tell ou to report him. He probably won't get shut down, they'll just clearly define what is expected, possibly fine him and check back later to make sure he has done his "duty".

As far as any illegal aliens that work there, tough. I don't have too much pity on illegal aliens that come here. If they are here legally, then they won't have any problems finding a job if/when they lose the one they are at now.

I've had some good friends that were illegals but when they get busted, I'm sorry, but they were doing something illegal.

Can you please post the name of the city and state that the International Buffet is located in so that if I ever travel through there, I'll know not to eat there.

Cleaning the toilets without gloves is an OSHA violation.

Paying you under the table is an IRS violation (they take that rather seriously too).

Unhealthy restaurant conditions is a violation of your local health ordinances.

Here are your options:

1. For OSHA questions and violation reports please see this webpage:

http://www.osha-slc.gov/html/Feed_Back.html#safety

Some OSHA fine are upwards of $40,000 per incident (mostly involving possible death), but even the minor violations can get them a good fine.

2. For IRS violations:

Call this phone number and ask how you can report someone paying you under the table. 1-800-829-1040

3. For the Health code violations, call your local health department and lodge an anonymous complaint against the restruant. Make sure and detail what you saw and encourage them to make a suprise inspection.
