Well just to give a bit of background... My wife and I moved into our house 2 and a half years ago. That spring (2002) we had 2 stray cats around. They had kittens and we were up to four. Mom and the female kitten both had more kittens the next year (2003) so we were up to 8 or so. The dads both left but the rest are still around.

Edit: Scroll down a bit for a bunch of pics...

For info and pictures, click here.. Puddles (more info below) is on the second page

There was also one other stray who would come yb but was not friendly at all. 3 nights ago, this unfriendly cat came by and was injured. He was not using his rear right leg at all and his face and neck were scratched up pretty bad. Last night I trapped him in a cat carrier and call the local Humane Society who said I should bring him in this morning but with his injuries and his unfriendliness he would have to probably be put to sleep. I was in agreement with them and thought that'd be best.

A bit after that, my wife heard a strange animal whining/screaming type sound coming from outside. I went to investiage and found a baby bunny that had been attacked by something because he was missing some fur and skin by his rear end. I scooped him up and put him in a box to take with me to the HS when I took in the other cat. So far, no major problems.

So, this morning, I pack up the cat carrier and box in my car and start to head to the Humane Society. As I rounded the corner by my house, I saw a cat sitting in the road. She was sitting up but wasn't moving, and there was blood all over the ground. I hopped out of my car and realized it was Puddles (See the link above and go to the Kittens page). She had apparently been hit by a car and they didn't bother to stop. I took the bunny out of the box and put him on the floor of my car (in a towel) and put Puddles in the box and since I was heading to the HS already, I now had 3 patients.

Puddles was a very friendly cat. I had worked with her for over a year to get friendly with her. Now she would run up when I went to give them food and she loved to be scratched and petted. But she didn't look good. At the HS they said it appeared she had a broken jaw. They didn't have any room and since she was injured they'd give a 98% chance she'd put put to sleep. So I left the other two animals there for them to work with and took Puddles to the nearby Emergency Vet clinic. They looked at her and agreed that the jaw might be broken, she was in tons of stress, and could have internal injuries that they didn't know about. Just finding this out would cost $500 and if surgery was needed it could rise to $2000.

I about started crying when I heard this because I can't afford that sort of bill. I conferred with my wife and we had no choice but to have Puddles put to sleep to end the pain she was having since there was no guarantee she would survive anyway. It was like losing my own pet or even more traumatic because I had raised these kittens from birth.

Anyway, we will be picking up the body later today to bury her in our backyard. Hopefully her sisters won't notice she's gone and go looking for her. She brought us many good times and lots of pictures which I will be updating on the site later tonight.

Sorry for the long read but I had to at least get this out before I broke down at work since that wouldn't go over too well.

Thanks for listening.

That's really sad man. We had to put a cat to sleep a few years ago and the decision was based on the same reason (financial). It really sucked.

The weird thing is that I was back at college about a week later when I woke up to find a random kitten at my feet that had climbed in through the window. She looked just like the one we had put to sleep the week before. And I mean exactly. :p

Wow, that is a really crappy day. At least you'll always have the good memories of Puddles. :(

We're currently housing a stray cat and her kittens. The kittens are about 6-7 weeks old, we found them when they were a couple of days ole. Memorial weekend one of the kittens passed away, we're not exactly sure what happened, but my 5 year old daughter claimed the kitten jumped out of her hands and fell on the tile floor and then didn't move. My 7 year old son took it hard, cause he had adopted that kitten as his own. I don't really care for cats, but it is sad to see a kitten pass away unexpectantly like that. We had a burial ceremony the next morning. Seeing the kids react to the burial was mind-altering. These very active, sometimes overhyped kids were now docile and embracing. It was strange.

Skoorb and I have two cats of our own and it almost brings me to tears to see animals hurting. Skoorbie even stops to move tortoises from the road so they don't get smushed by cars. I once stopped for a cat dying in the middle of the road and held him as he died (he was in too much pain to move and I knew he had minutes) and I was traumatized for weeks. There is just something about hurting animals and touches a special place in some people....I am sorry you had to go through what you did. Those animals were lucky you were around. Just remember: Puddles had a much better life because of you!

sorry for your loss :(

It sounds like you have a racoon, or a possum or some sort that is attacking these animals....I'm not sure what you can do about it, but hopefully your other cats will be ok.

Let me tell you why college kids around here SUCK. Every spring, right around the time when the kids graduate, there is a sudden increase in the number of strays (and, not coincidentally, the number of kitties a short time later). I REALLY wish they made pets have implated chips so these LOSERS could be tracked down - this ISN'T a "thing", it's a living being with feelings.

Rant over...

Q: have you had any of these ferrel cats spayed or neutered?

If not, I can't feel too sorry for you or the dead cats.

Pets = off the "survival of the fittest wheel of life"
strays = fair game

We had all the cats spayed and neutered last summer. One had a litter the day before so we have to take the last one in thsi summer if we can catch him. They are just one big happy family. They even get along with our dog. I just hope the oens that are left aren't affected and don't realize that their sister is gone and not coming back. :(

I know how you feel. My wife and I had to put our kitty down a few months ago.

Unfortunately there are always more to replace them with! :(

hey I was thinking the same thing. You should be more concerned about how it is that the bunny got jacked up, if the cat got hit by a car thats one thing, but having another cat and rabbit come up injured...well that should be investigated. Since the rabbit probably supposedly outran his attacker, I am thinking a possum or something equally as mean.

do you have any idea what's getting at your pets?

that sucks dude. we had a cat named shadow 18lbs solid black except white under his chin, he was a good 7 or 8 years old, he was a diabetic so we gave him shots twice a day, he got a low blood pressure I guess and coudlnt move, all he could do was move is his head. I gave him some ice cream he got up and went on. later that night he went into a ceisure type thing and was in it for the next day or so. I had to leave the next morning to go on a trip and had to kiss him goodbye bcuz i knew i prolly woudlnt see him again.

few days later the vet called said he was doing ok while in the ceisure but he caught pnemonia(sp?) and died:(

i loved him and took it very hard and am getting a little choked up thinking about it here at work:(

i have a 7 year old golden retriever(122 lbs) who has epilectic (sp?) ceisures and it hurts so bad to catch her in one not knowing if shes in a world of pain or not. I hate not being able to do anything about it. we give her medicine twice a day but we also have a pool and Im scared to death I will walk in the backyard one day and see her floating in the pool due to having a ceisure and falling in:(

sorry for the pain and loss=[
