i have a 80gb 7200rpm hard drive just sitting there with absolutely no air moving around it. is this okay? I'm scared that it will drastically shorten it's life. I've had it running for a little over a month. I'm planning to get a hard drive cooler as soon as i get the money but it doesn't look that's going to be anytime soon (i'm in debt). I just wanted to know if it's okay to leave it like this.

Instead of running for 5+ years, it might only last 2-3 years without extra cooling. In 2 years it will prolly be obsolete anyways. 2 years ago we had 2-6GB drives :) I use Dual Coolermaster 4002s for my 2 IBM 60GXP 20GB 7200rpm drives.

Both my Antec sx-1030b cases have a $3 fan I placed in front of the HDD cage. Both have IBM drives (GPX75 and GPX60 reputed to be high failure drives) and no fproblems to date so I guess coolers do help.

No need to go overboard though, just good case circulation.

You have a death wish, my friend ;)

I dont trust those fan things... Stick with something like the CoolerMaster 4002 or the Orion cooler that www.2cooltek.com sells. Those coolers with just the fans underneath are stupid, dont get them.
