AN AUSSIE BLOKE accused of being the mastermind of the world's largest online spam operation appeared in court Down Under today.

M'learned friend for the prosecution claimed that Lance Thomas Atkinson, 26, was involved in a large scale spam operation that sent 10 billion emails each day to Internet users all over the world.

Atkinson has admitted taking part in the operation that lured people to snake oil websites peddling dodgy prescription drugs as well as "male enhancement" and weight-loss pills. The websites were hosted in China and the drugs were shipped from India.

Atkinson has been fined $16 million by US authorities over his spam scams and was also fined $100,000 by a New Zealand court. He was dragged into an Aussie court by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

The authority blamed him for more than 100,000 spam email complaints from Australian residents.

Atkinson had co-operated with investigators and the appropriate penalty was a $210,000 fine, the court was told.

Justice Andrew Greenwood reserved his decision in the case until next Tuesday.

Atkinson worked with the American citizen Jody Smith. The pair controlled a "botnet" of 35,000 computers capable of sending 10 billion email messages a day, the bewigged one was told.

I'm usually a pretty tolerant guy, but in this case I support the death penalty.

It boggles my mind that spamming is actually profitable. Same with nigerian scamming. I just can't comprehend that there are that many stupid people on the planet.

When you are sending out 10 billion emails a day, chances are there are going to be a least a few hundred to thousands of people who will actually respond to these spam offers.

Someone should rain down tons of Publisher's Clearing house, Supermarket ads, and Geico flyers as he walks to his car.

Right - assuming that all 35k PCs are on 24/7, that's about 3.3 emails per second. Pretty reasonable...

I dunno ... have you seen some of the computers people are using to get on the net these days ... lol

If each email is roughly 10KB, all you need is a 1GBps connection to send 10 billion emails in a day.

My hotmail account junk folder is filled with these types of spam.

I think we should resort to medieval methods of punishment. Put him in stocks and pelt him with:

Easily done if you have a 30,000 PC botnet under your control.

Then again the overhead of it being sent to and frow is probably several dozen times that 10KB. Not to mention the bandwidth used up to report the spam, the algorithms to sort the spam, spam loading images that you would never have looked at anyway, page reloads that would have never happened etc etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if each one constituted 1 cool MB of transferred data by the time it met its end. The vast majority of that not being dont by botnets, but the public time, money, and resources.

Fry this guy.

Why is it that they pick and choose? ALL spammers should be brought to court and trialled. Spam needs to be made officially illegal.

Hopefully he gets a really nasty sentance.
