http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-polluted-by-us-navy-human-waste-9193596.html

Some sections of the article:

"The American military has poured hundreds of tonnes of human sewage and waste water into a protected coral lagoon on the British-owned base of Diego Garcia over three decades in breach of environmental rules, The Independent can reveal."

"Despite these undertakings, it has emerged that US Navy vessels have been discharging waste water, including treated sewage, into the clear lagoon ever since a naval support station was established on Diego Garcia in the early 1980s."

I know that this source is questionable, as are all sources, and we should read with caution. Everyone has an agenda, including me, so keep that in mind as well.

However, it is really shameful what modern man is doing to this planet. Literally crapping everywhere. Trashing the planet more and more each day. With their lovely navies, with their lovely air forces and armies. Destroying everything. Now they think they are going to frack and drill "responsibly." Yeah.

This is just a tiny, tiny example of what is going on. But apparently no one cares. They don't care because their life has not been impacted directly, but maybe indirectly. When one is affected then one will care(??). So how long do we have until all this starts affecting us directly? Or will we justify it by claiming that we must accept pollution because of "modernization" and all that BS?

But with overpopulation, over-consumption, materialism, and with education encouraging even more consumption things don't look good. Science is all about giving humans their gadgets and their conveniences. It's not really about making the human better in the deeper sense; it's about keeping him entertained with gadgets and technology. This is what is being pushed upon the world. Now your going to have India, China, Africa, South America and elsewhere consuming all sorts of "natural" resources so they can get their gadgets and technology.

We're heading towards a planet of maybe 8 billion people soon. All being educated to consume. All being propagandized by their own society and by the global media to get an education in order to consume and buy, buy, buy. For Western people, who are already in this circle, this isn't new. However, elsewhere in the world, this is being brought about. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how this planet will handle a frenzy of 8 billion people competing, fighting, consuming all against one another. All for what? I'm not sure myself.

I'm not quite sure what "treated sewage" actually means.

But the navy knows better than this. They need to moor the ships away from the coral etc. Even the water automatically pumped out by the bilge pumps often has diesel fuel, oil and other pollutants in it. Anyone who has been around boats much knows this.

As for sewage, they should consider doing what cruise lines do: Put a waste treatment facility on board. The cruise lines basically incinerate the waste into compact ash form and drop it off in various ports for approved disposal.

Unfortunately that's probably not going to happen, they won't compromise combat effectiveness for environmental concerns. Treatment facility means added weight that doesn't contribute anything to the vessel's purpose.

Do fish poop in the ocean?
Nah, they do it on land.

When I was in the Navy, the ships pumped raw sewage from the CHT tank overboard when the ship was more than 50 miles from land. When in port the waste collected in the CHT tank was pumped into a sewage connection. The valve for the piping to pump directly overboard was closed and locked (padlock) when in port to prevent any accidental discharge.

CHT = Collection, Holding, and Transfer

Diego Garcia  I spent two weeks there while in transit 30 years ago. What a godawful place.

I used to design Naval bases as a child but my focus was always on keeping them save and invisible from aerial attack. I can see how an undeveloped mind might leave what to do with old poop out of an equation.
