Oh, oh wait. That's right. Stuff like 6 speeds (which they're rolling out as fast as they can) is sort of the e-penis thing where you can stand there with your buddies talking about how many more gears one automatic truck has over another automatic truck or car.

But, if it had the new six speed in it, I would wager my house that there would be at least one complaint about waiting for that six speed to mature a bit before trusting it and wanting to actually own one, or how unnecessary it is in a pickup truck with a V8 engine and gobs of power.

Publications give minimal consideration to cost because they don't pay for them.

The rest of us don't get cars for free.

We did more than just test-drive a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado; we bought one. Called dealers and talked to salesmen just like everybody else. Of course, before we got that far we had to decide which version to get. It's not an easy task as the 2007 Silverado serves up a redneck Christmas list of options. There are three cab styles, three bed lengths, three trim levels, five suspensions and seven engines to choose from.
Edmunds purchased this vehicle for the purposes of evaluation.

BTW-A friend of mine just traded his 2005 GMC Sierra for a 2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab. Man, there's no way I'd pick a Chevy over the Tundra. That is one sweet truck.

BWAHAHAHA!!! Unless you actually have to use it for work. I agree the Toyota is a nice truck, but it's not a work truck. Most pickups are bought for working not hauling Japanese car fanboys.
Agreed. I think the new Silverado's look promising.
Tundra has a puny differential, tiny radiator and fan, and a flexy frame. Good for commuting, and pretty quick. But I would pick a different truck.

I don't know if Toyota fixed it or not but their frames were also rusting from the inside out because of cheap recycled steel. I'd hope that they would have fixed it by now but who knows....

Anyone have that picture of the old Toyota 4x4 on a car lift that broke in half due to frame rust?

Question Jules. If the Tundra is so superior to the Silverado, why has Toyota constantly been pushing back it's release date and refused to release and real numbers? I mean with no flaws it shouldn't take that long to redesign a superior vehicle, right?

It's too bad the GM trucks start to really suck as the GVW goes up. At the 1-ton level they really can't compete with the F350 performance and towing wise. And neither GM or Dodge has a vehicle to compete with the F450 and F550. They simply don't make one.

So that whole market of tow trucks, ambulances, service trucks etc. - Ford continues to own.

The hell they are. Most pickups are bought for the same reason most SUVs are bought for. To haul some dumbass with a small penis to his job sitting in front of a computer all day. Or to haul the kids to school and soccer practice.

No.

Yep...GM certainly doesn't make trucks to compete with the F550, one of Ford's commercial trucks. That's unless you discount GM's Silverado 3500 chassis cab ambulance or chassis cab, GM's Kodiak C4500/C5500 series trucks. They get even larger with the Kodiak C6500/7500/8500, the W series, and the T series. Of course, these are just the medium duty trucks, but compet very well with the F550. There are competitors tothe F450, too.

To think GM has no vehicles to compete model-to-model with anything Ford produces is just stupid.

ps.......Dodge has their commercial lineup, too. So they also compete directly with GM and Ford, but the line isn't as deep or broad.

Errr...the Silverado 3500 is only rated at 11,400lbs and the only GM truck that is between 12,000lbs and 19,000lbs GVW is the C4500, and it's way to big for a lot of purposes. The physical size of the chassis and body is what I'm talking about. I'm in the business, and have outfitted those trucks before. The F450 is a much better choice in that weight range.

A few years ago (2000) we had to have a couple 4WD trucks in the 16,000GVW range, and they had to be GM due to a contract we had with them. Well, GM didn't make any at that time (now they have the C4500 - but those would have been too big then too). We ended up buying C3500HDs which were the right GVW but not available in 4WD. We ended up sending them to Monroe Truck Equipment and having them converted to 4WD for almost $9,000 a pop. And they still weren't the truck the F450s are.

As for Dodge, we don't install ANYTHING on a Dodge chassis. We wont be held liable. BTW, what Dodge has a GVW of more than 12,500lbs?

GM and Ford PLEASE bring back the days of the no frills trucks with crank windows, no cruise, or leather seating, ac was 55 and 2 windows down, and a realistic price.

please go back to 1960 where you came from

There is nothing wrong in asking for a simple, inexpensive work truck. I wouldn't want one, but to anyone their own.
My car has no electric options and no AC - next car will have them, hopefully - but a car without AC, power windows, heated mirrors and so on is usable

Wow and I thought your average asian fanboy was bad, Jules you've taken it to another level. ;) :p

While I hate Ford over Chevy, I will admit that Ford makes a much better pickup than the Silverado.

And, Jules most pickup owners do use it for a work truck.

I don't know what funboy is talking about. They always sell a stripped down, bare bones truck....it is just that nowadays they give you the option of a really "spiced up" truck as well. That's a nice thing.

The new F150 was better than the old Silverado in some ways. I've never liked Ford's engines though...always felt the GM engines were better.

FYI, the 4spd auto is just temporary until they can ramp up production of their 6spd auto.

In '99 my dad got a Ram 2500, with EVERY option except for the 4.10 rear end and clearance lights and still only ended up spending $34k. We're talking 4WD, leather, 6 speed, diesel. Everything that was available he got. $41k for a half ton? Yikes!

<-- wants full size trucks to go back to being trucks and compact trucks to go back to being compact.

Funny, I'd say at least 50% of the trucks I see around here have some guy with a white shirt and tie on behind the wheel. I wonder what they're working on...

Come visit the midwest Jules, you'll see the workers of the heartland driving their trucks. I'd like to see any Nissan/Toyota/Honda truck pull a trailer (24'+) as good as a Chevy/Ford/Dodge. It just won't be happening.

GM/Ford/Dodge = real trucks

Nissan/Toyota/Honda = wannabe trucks ;)

That honda ridgeline is hideous too, all that excessive trim makes it look overweight or something... ugh

Those are some impressive numbers. Would make a perfect work truck and weekend boat tower.

A hundred more HP and 70 more lb-ft then my dad's 01 F150 and it can only tow 2800lb more then my dad's truck? And for about 25k more then he paid for the Ford? .... am I supposed to be impressed?

And while I hate to validate Jules' claims..... I'm a call center guy, and I drive my dad's truck (while he's in AK) and am seriously considering an 06 F150 of my own. I rarely, if ever, put anything in the bed. :(

Funny though the 4spd doesn't hurt the Silverado at all. Its still gets superior mileage and great performance and reliability. Funny that the current Tundra gets worse mileage with a smaller engine and more gears.

For those that want the 6-speed automatic, it will be available in a few months on the GMC model of the truck.

lol 6 litre V8 FTW!

i dont know wether id put an isolated ride as one of the good points

i hate cars where the steering conveys nothing to you about whats going on. like lexus, they are beautifully built cars, well spec'd, fast, but they are sooo numb to drive, its a shame.
