I just got a call from my friend that he finally won a bracelet last night. He's in Vegas getting ready for the annual Big Event and he won the $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em tournament. He placed 5th in the same event last year and won $115,339. This year he finally did it and got 1st and took the $631,550 first place prize along with the World Series bracelet. I just hope he doesn't do the same as last year and lose all the money in the casino. He lost the entire winning last year in 30 minutes right after playing blackjack.

That place was a zoo when I was there at the beginning of this month. Congrats to Mr. Woo.

Nice, are you Korean? I used to go to church with David Woo back in the day. I know he used to have some poker games at his condo a long time ago, and he used to drive an M5... but I haven't spoken to him in ages.

is that crazy main event final table several month delay in effect this year?

(where they play up to the final table, then reconvene in a couple months to play it out)

I grew up with Woo and played tournament basketball with him all the time. I still see him and hang out with him regularly when he's in town although now he spends lot of time traveling to different tournaments and cash games. He drives yellow C6 Z06 now.

The final table of the main event will be played on the 9th and 10th of November, rather than on July 16.[2] This change in schedule has been made to allow ESPN to broadcast the final table on November 11, shortly after it was played. All final table players will be paid ninth place prize money in July, with the remaining prize pool distributed in November.

On November 9 players will play down from nine to two players and on the 10th the winner will be decided.

So everyone plays a nice game of power for like 3 days, gets to the final table, and then they have a 4 month hiatus? How does that work? Like don't you have to be in rhythm to do well in poker? Streaks help. Now you're going to reset everyone and go to a final table. I just don't get how that works. It's like saying let's play 4 games of the NBA Finals in June and finish the last 3 up in August.

Good for him, can't wait for this years main event. Still not sure how I feel about the 4 month-long recess once the final table is decided, but I suppose it's good for people like me probably wouldn't be able to wait that long before wanting to know who won.

i had a big ol' reply typed out but instead of making a long-winded diatribe im just going to summarize it and say espn blows.

if anything, do something similiar to ppv last year and show it live without pocket cam's on espn2. so people will be upset because they missed the world curling championships, boo freakin hoo. and when its done they can show the edited, pocket cam, norman chad making another terrible marriage joke ("i havent seen a slow roll that terrible since my wife sent over a process server to hand over papers") version of the event.

Correct, this is a good thing for amatuers, gives them time to secure sponsors and get "fame". Its good for getting more people interested in poker as well. The people who make the final table will all get 9th place money immediately and then wait until the final table months later. The flipside to this is that it will give the amatuers time to get "coaches" to help them play as well as they can. If a pro is at the table then obviously everyone else at the table will be watching every single video they can get their hands on.

I think its shitty, but i guess its good in a few ways.
(This is how it was explained to me when i was in vegas, feel free to correct what a rio worker told me.)
