World?s 1st Mech Warrior Becomes Reality

Japanese robotics and machineries manufacturer Sakakibara-Kikai has developed the world's first bi-pedal exoskeleton, bringing the battlemechs and cyborg technology found in sci-fi movies and novels into reality. This mechanatron is similar to those found in movies such as the Imperial Scout Walker (AT-ST) found in Star Wars. Such heavy-duty machineries can be deployed as fighting mechanatron such as those found in Zion of Matrix Revolution by mounting guns on the sides.

Checked out the video... wow, that would be completely useless in battle. 😕 The legs "slide", looks it requires a 100% smooth surface to "walk" on. And every movement makes the thing wobble.

Legs on a battleground are a terrible idea. Enemies would just "aim for the legs". Treads are the way to go for ground assult. They can be armored, go anywhere, and are very durable.

The walking robots you see in animae and Star Wars are more for dramatic effect than practicality.

imagine an army of battle mechanatrons marching towards and crushing the enemies.

I'm already imagining how fvcked up our future will be, with engineers having been raised on Transformers and anime.

Not bad for homemade.

Now add some electroinic gyros, brushless servos for the legs, the computer processing of a F22, and Spectra coated Carbon fiber body around a titanium body. But then the thing would cost 400 million. Damn cost always gets in the way.

Tentacle rape from Optimus Prime?

Well that's a good first step - so to speak.

But did anyone else notice that it can't seem to walk on anything other than smooth concrete? Those footpads barely clear the ground, almost like it's shuffling. One of the key considerations for bi-pedal motion is that you can handle uneven terraine by stepping over stuff, which this clearly can't do. For the near term, this is a demo-only, unless you plan to do all of your fighting in a Wal-Mart parking lot...

There was an Ebay auction awhile back where a company was selling a proto-type that looked like the loader from Aliens. Starting bid was $40,000. I don't know if it sold, but they wanted to use the proceeds to fund a more advanced model.

Totally agree. Way back in the early 90's, I owned anything with a lowly Locust in the original Mechwarrior. Shoot at a knee, repeat, keep moving(swift enough to keep out of site from weapons), eventually the biggest, baddest, armed to the teeth Super-Mega-Mech would be lying on its' back helpless.

IRL, if anyone ever makes a weapon like a Mech, they'll get owned so hard no one will ever consider it again.
