World of Starcraft

Lastnight I was thinking about WoW as I was falling asleep (was playing right before hand so I was still in the grinding mood :p) and I pondered the new content they keep adding and will be adding. After a while, adding new , original stuff will get progressivily more difficult. So what if they start bringing in some tech (hopefully this will not happen, although the gnomes already have some technical stuff anyways). I was just kinda thinking away, I know it's kinda weird to think of tech in WoW....but then it hit me.

OMFG! What if Blizzard made ANOTHER MMORPG, but in the STARCRAFT universe!?

I know this has probably already been brought up some other time, but hell...I've not seen it posted before. The point is....what if they actually did it?

DISCUSS!

Tech is a perfect environment for an MMO.....except that it invariably has to revolve around guns rather than the hand-to-hand hack and slash of fantasy MMOs.

Hack and slash, for a number of reasons, leads to better balanced and more entertaining gameplay when you're dealing with online RPGs.

It'd be cool to see a World Of Starcraft, but I don't think it'd work. I have the feeling the rock-paper-scissors system would be unbalanced, or overly complex.

I could see it working if you chose a race, played through that storyline and had to fight the other races along the way, in like mass PvP, but I don't know how well 1vs1 PvP would work, especially if you've got a gun and they don't.

we need starcraft 2--- same unit caps and all as the original, just 3d. a starcraft like DOW (but bigger) and a great map editor would be a great RTS

Of course it comes to mind...the Starcraft universe is quite cool and has that 'Blizzard flair'.

I doubt it would happen soon though. Blizzard will probably milk the WoW cow for a long time.

And if it happened, expect 90% of the population to play Terran Ghost :p.

LOL, yeah, WoW works because its basically cramming the WC universe into your tried and true D&D formula of medieval fantasy. StarCraft is a different story. You don't have real "magic", especially not with Zerg or Terran, and thus doing actual damage instead of roll based turns and attacks it would most likely need to be player controlled. Something along the lines of a Planetside type of game. Perhaps force players to choose between Terran or Protoss and fight against endless swarms of Zerg. Perhaps make Zerg an option but on some of the higher class stuff, perhaps you could be a a Hunter Killer or something and lead swarms of lesser troops into battle.

Then there are elements such as space fighters where you could climb into one and take it into combat, something like Homeworld meets Battlefield...only instead of one person controlling everything, you've got scores of people doing the "micro management", and far more peopel than a Battlefield game.

Come to think of it, it would be a lot easier to make a StarCraft: Battlefield type game than it would be a WoS, or most likley SoS - Systems of StarCraft.

I'd be a Protos Tmeplar :p It would be awesome for a World of Starcraft (my fav game of all time) but I would much rather a sequal Starcraft 2 RTS to be made. It's Blizzard best selling game ever, It's HUGE in Korea yet they make no sequal?

That's probably true, I don't think they can.
Heck, I doubt if anyone can, IMO StarCraft was without a doubt the best RTS ever.

I think there would be a LOT of balance issues in World of StarCraft. Personally, I think SC2 would be a better choice, even they cannot outdo the original, you know throngs of people are going to buy it. :p

In WoS, you'd only be able to choose infantry units. You'd have the firebat, marine, ghost, medic, hydralisk, zergling, zealot, dragoon, templar, and those zerg things that made clouds. The tank type units probably wouldn't be choices, ultralisks, etc.

Its true, its hard to make a good modern RPG that incorporates ranged and melee attacks...because guns make all melee attacks totally obsolete whereas bows and arrows can be balanced pretty well with swords.

Another thing about World of Starcraft (or maybe 'Space of Starcraft', haha), is that all the classes would be completely race restrictive. You couldn't have zergling marines...or terran zealots...or protoss ghosts, as opposed to say, WoW, where any race can be warriors, most can be rogues, etc.

It would have to have a very different design from traditional MMO's

Warhammer and Warhammer 40K are totally separate beasts.

yeah i know, but it's gonna be a 40K mmorpg i believe

*EDIT* nope i am totally WRONG. the warhammer online in the works is for regular warhammer, not 40K. boooooooo!!

In DAoC, classes were race specific. Midgard got Warrior, Hibernia got Hero, and Albion got Armsman. Each had different attributes too. Warrior could double wield or single wield (every other class had to pick one to specialize in). Hero could use a spear and got Spirit Of The Hunt. Armsman could wear plate armor and also got a ranged attack skill in crossbow.
