World Exclusive ... Asus P4G8X "Granite Bay" motherboard

i wonder if you have to put ram in pairs...?

pretty good layout except for the atx 12V connector... ram slots a good distance from AGP, main power not blocking anything, etc.

What's the blue magic pci slot? Is it a 64bit slot would be sweet for scsi if it is. I have a feeling you'll need memory in pairs since the memory slots have two colors for it. If it was like the nforce dual channel would be good can use one memory till you can get another.

I thought N-force needed 2 sticks to run in dual channel mode or whatever you would call it. If you had one stick in it would just run normally.

Found out what the blue slot is nothing special.
"The PCI slot is an all-new ASUS feature called the "Blue Magic Slot". Besides supporting all the conventional PCI applications, the Blue Magic Slot also supports wireless LAN cards. The great thing about the feature is that it supports 802.11a, 802.11b and Bluetooth standards, making the A7V8X the first motherboard with all three standards. ASUS is planning to introduce wireless LAN card later this year equipped to handle the three standards."
It's on their kt-400 board also.

Kyle over at HardOCP has this to say about GB:

As expected, Intel will be launching its Granite Bay chipset on the first day of Comdex. This is represented by Intel as being a Workstation chipset but you can count on seeing more than a couple retail mainboards built on the platform. For you Intel fans out there, mark my words, this is going to be the board to have well into next year.

Dual-Channel DDR ....... I would guess so.

Pairs of DDR ram

nforce doesn't need it...

nforce isnt dual channel only. 1 stick to run in single channel, 2 for dual channel operation.

Optional serial ATA, RAID, Audio, Lan, 1394
Nice to see that some of that stuff is optional.

SFS (Stepless Frequency Selection) from 100MHz up to 400MHz at 1Mhz increments. :Q:Q
That's some forward looking technology. Don't see much use beyond 200 though.

Fixed AGP/PCI frequencies
Thank goodness.

Oh yeah, I really want this board !!

Funny thing about the Blue magic PCI slot.... its nothing more than a marketing thingy. So what, they come out with a BlueTooth LAN card. It'll work in ANY PCI slot. ASUS always has to do something to make them look like they have special. Anyone remember the ASUS funky PCI slot for their com/LAN cards?

Oh well...

What is really missing is 64/66 and/or 64/133 (PCI-X) slots. This chipset is screaming for a fast i/o storage system. Hopefully things will change so that you don't have to invest in a SMP system to get the goods.

Finally, a board that supports 4GB of RAM! 🙂

Cheers!
