ok guys, maybe I'm missing something, but what could a $1300 video card do for us? 3D rendering, premiere/afx/vegas?

What does this thing actually accelerate? What programs/functions would it actually speed up? A friend bought one, I'm at a loss as to why, and I'm not sure he knows himself... ?
I think some of the newer gaming cards have hardware mpeg2 encoding, but I can't tell if this thing even has that! I recall that a pair of opterons can render DV in realtime, but can't a raptor DV card do the same thing?
