I work in a kind of dysfunctional IT area. I've got about a years worth of experience while most people there are 5, 10+ years here.

They had a big meeting with a higher up and he whaled on them for poor performance and he referenced me being very good at what I do for being "new".

How well is this gonna bold with my relations with all these people that I work with. Some of them give me shit in a jokingly way but I got a feeling they're gonna dislike me if that makes sense?

i don't know the dynamics, but i would be inclined to keep going, sounds like someone high up has your back.

A boss gave you props and you're worrying if everyone else is going to hate you??? How old are you???

Who cares? People are a bunch of petty twats. People are gonna dislike you regardless of what you do. Do your job right, be nice to your coworkers, and stay away from politics. That might not get you rich, but it'll preserve your sanity.

My theory is to stay the hell out of it. If someone compliments your work, thank them but don't make it a big deal. If one of your teammates brings up something positive that your boss said about you in a teasing way, play it off.

DON'T PARTICIPATE IN WORKPLACE POLITICS.

As long as you are down to earth and nice with the coworkers you should be okay. You might get one or two haters but it should be fine. I had a similar situation before, and people were pretty cool with me. The higher ups are signing your paychecks, not the coworkers, and as long as you aren't being a douche to your coworkers you should be fine.

Listen to lxskllr, as he is correct. As you progress in your career, you're going to find that everyone you meet thinks they are absolutely awesome at their jobs. When they don't get the props and others do, they'll tear you down, make excuses, etc. Don't let it bother you, and do as lxskllr said -- be nice to everyone, do your job, and try not to play politics.

That was stupid as hell for the boss to do that, that's not going to foster good will between you and the others.

If your boss had praised another of your co-workers instead, would that have upset you? If not, why do you think his complimenting of you would upset them? And if it does upset them, does that seem like a reasonable response, or one about which you probably shouldn't care?

It really depends on the kind of place you are at. My current job would tell the whiner to STFU and focus on their actions. I've worked in places that felt is necessary to pamper those that complained the most. They let those people basically run the place. I even lost my job there because of it.

It's entirely possible that the OP is a more level-headed guy than his co-workers. If that's the case it doesn't matter what offends him, what matters is what offends the crazies. Don't get me wrong, putting yourself in their perspective is a good idea, but some people are definitely less sane than others.

"Man, looks like I got a pass this time. It won't be fun when being the "new guy" wears off and the blamestorming hits me."

Acknowledge what happened, show that you recognize it was basically luck of the draw, and build an empathetic connection by indicating that you expect to be in their shoes sometime in the future.

You'd better check your car over VERY carefully each time you go to start it...you never know who got pissed off...nor how vengeful they may be.
