I hate work events, they're always a sloppy trainwreck and I really don't like going. I go if it's good for networking but I rarely want anything to do with this place in my freetime.

I like them. Free 100$ dinners and booze. Plus the next week is spent getting comments on how good looking my wife was at the party. May not have the biggest paycheck here, but I have the hottest wife!

I've never been laid off and in my entire 15+ year career, I've gone to exactly 1 company picnic and the only Christmas parties I've gone to were the ones held in the office during the day (2 or 3 total). I've also received a couple of promotions and get awards just about every year.

Depends on the company. Sucking up and playing the game definitely works at some, but has no effect at others. Instead of trying to shove square pegs into round holes, the smart companies realize that people are different and have different strengths, desires, and abilities. Believe me, over my career, there have been plenty of "forced socialization" events that I couldn't get out of and frankly, they didn't benefit me at all. The coworkers I care about and want to see outside of work are the ones that I eat lunch with, game with, or have a beer outside of work. I don't really care about Jim from accounting or Bob from HR in a personal capacity; I just want to ensure that they can do their jobs and if that is the case, my work is done.

You don't have to suck up to anyone. It doesn't hurt to get to know others in your company. The more people you know the better. Who knows, maybe Bob from HR is the guy you have to interview with for you next career advancement. Maybe Jim from accounting can help get your family member a job in the accounting department.

It really does depend on the company. I work for a large company and the more people you know and the more people that know you the better.

We have these occasional events at my work place, aimed at providing fun at workplace and increase the interaction between the employees. I do not like participating in these events, but my manager insists that I participate. He says, "Everybody is having fun. You will get to know more about your colleagues. You can make new friends..blah..blah..blah". I was like, "I would rather make friends first and have fun than pretend having fun with people i hardly know"

What do you guys do about these events?

I talk to people, mingle, get to know them better. Christ, I've been at my current job since last September and already I have probably a dozen new friends here. I'm not saying that we do things outside of work together but it wouldn't be out of the question with some of these people at this point.

I try not to socialize with the people I work with.
At times it's unavoidable. When necessary, I go, make an appearance, then leave as soon as possible.

Yeah, can't say that I've ever been to a work event that turned into a quasai sex party. :p

The fun you have is inversely proportional to how much you care about your job. Parties at real jobs suck. The party at best buy was awesome. Shit jobs in general are awesome. I have slept with 3 coworkers at shit jobs :D

Ask yourself, "Is this good for the company?"
