First yes I do know the irony of posting a workout question on a computer geek forum but some of us are avid at it :p

I just finished my 2nd ACL surgery in 2 years and now I'm serverly out of shape and lost 20lbs in muscle mass just from the inability to work out. Now that I can i'm working out back on my normal 6 day a week schedule and wondering you any of you know some good supplements to invest in? I've always done it naturally but now I'm just SOL and need to get back to my normal weight.

I was thinking of buying Isopure Protein, or some Whey protein. Creatin seems to be out there but don't know if i can hydrate myself enough to take it.

What do you guys use? and can i buy it locally or do you know an online service?

Thanks,
-Chris

Don't ask me why but I love talking about working out.

Anyways, I've been trying to gain weight myself for the past year, with no avail. In that time I've tried whey protein and creatine, but neither one helped. I was working out about 5x a week, doing a different muscle group on each of those days. I was trying to eat a lot of protein (150 grams or more a day), but that didn't help me. I also tried eating a jar of peanut butter (tons of peanut butter sandwiches with wheat bread) every 8-9 days for about 2 months, and in that time I gained no weight whatsoever.

Recently I've been reading some stuff by Stuart McRobert, and decided to follow his advice. I've only been working out twice a week. One day is either squat or deadlift, along with a few sets for misc muscles, and another day for bench, dips, pull-ups, and rows. I'm not taking any supplement at all. I used to weigh anywhere from 162-164 lbs, with my heaviest weight in the past year being 165 (very rarely). Since starting this routine, I've gained about a one pound a week. Yesterday I weighed myself at 168.5 lbs. That's my heaviest bodyweight ever. And I've skipped quit a few meals.

Instead of eating a lot of protein, I no longer worry too much about it. I just make sure I'm getting some protein at every meal. I'm eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches too. I try to keep it healthy. But in general I just eat what I want, aside from stuff like ice cream, mayo, sodas, and candy. So hopefully this new weight gain is not all fat. :p

I know it's hard to resist working out as much as you used to. Heck, it's still hard for me, but I'm getting used to it. When you think abouti t, working out less to gain more weight is a good thing.

Workout every other day, gradually increasing weight and eat a LOT. The only way to really gain wait is to eat a hell of alot, like 6 meals a day. I know someone training for police examinations who had to bulk up to get into better shape. He's been working out every other day, but he is constantly eating, its really funny/ridiculous. It's extremely rare to spot him without food, but he's huge now and has only been at it for like 8 months. He only eats healthy too. Make sure you take in the amount of grams of protein equal to your weight daily. I tried Met-RX Protein Plus power bars (34g) but they taste like crap unfortunately. Better off eating lots of steak, chicken, tuna, and other fish. He also eats pasta straight up for the carbs. Yea, so basically eat whenever you can :)

Eat a lot. Work out every other day. Rest up. Eat 1g protein for every lb you weigh. I'd recommend a Whey shake from GNC, 50g's a serving -- though you may want to mix it with some hersheys chocolate syrup and some milk... tastes better that way. Also, make sure you are taking the appropriate amount of vitamins.

BTW, creatine works wonders, if you keep yourself hyrdrated enough. Just get into the habit of it, and you'll keep on it.

Thanks for the responces.

I'm actually on my old routine of 4 meals a day (with one meal replacement if needed). Mostly steak, tuna, fish, and peanuts.

I'm gonna head out and pick up some Whey so I don't have to order online, give that a try for a few weeks and then maybe add creatin in a few weeks if no difference. and I just weighed myself Damn it im 6'6" and down to 202 Not good :(.

Ah well we'll fix that ;)

I'm doing the every other day ,with some cardio thrown in on my off day, my question is what protein supplements don;t taste like total crap ? I don't want to have to dump sugary products in just to choke the stuff down.

If you can get it on sale, MetRx tastes ok. But it's really expensive for what it is, so if you use a lot or can't find it on sale it's not a good solution.

I would seriously consider not working out so often. Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 other friends who worked out regularly with me on a 5x a week routine. We were all trying to gain weight. 2 of them ate a lot, including tons of protein, and 1 took protein shakes just as I had. I took met-rx for a while (and I actually liked the taste), and he tried met-rx, then some wholesale protein powder from the protein factory (tasted like chalk!). After a year, they (and me too) still look the same, and gained practically no weight. All of us are in our early twenties, and of various races (white, half white/half asian, white, half white/half mexican).

I started working out over 2 years ago. Gained about 10 lbs the first 6 months to a year, but then didn't any more weight until 4 weeks ago. 4 weeks ago, I started working out way less. Like I posted earlier, only twice a week. But I've actually gained 3 lbs in those 4 weeks, after not gaining any weight for over a year (and incidentally, no real strength gain over the past year... sometimes I would even get a bit weaker).

I'm even eating less protein than I was before; probably half as much (I'm not really counting anymore). I'm eating a lot more bread though, and definitely eating more fat (intentionally). In the past, a friend and I were so worried about gaining weight in fat that we started taking a minimal amount of fat. Both of us ended up getting really dried out skin.

I'm not saying this is definitely the way to go. But I know what didn't work for me. And I know working out twice a week appears to be working thus far, even though it feels really weird to work so little. It's kind of hard to tell if I'm getting stronger (still in the build up stage of my cycle), but I should know for sure in a few more weeks. If I'm able to break my 1 year strength plateau by working out so little, then I think that sends out a strong message.

Thinking back, I realized that the month when I set my personal bench press record (May) was my busiest month; the month that I missed the most workouts. I increased my bench press by 10 lbs that month during one workout, and was able to repeat it on my next chest workout. In June, I started working out according to my normal scheduel again, and my bench press dropped 10 lbs. I kept telling myself that I just lacked motivation, or I just got lucky on those 2 previous workouts. But now I think... maybe I was seriously overtraining.

Anyways, just wanted to present this info. Who knows, maybe I'm a genetic weakling... but I have my doubts about that. :p
