Uh, all you need to pass into the us is a drivers lisence.

In 2000, that was true.

Since 9/11/2001, it has not been true.

I've done it since then. I think it was 2003 when I crossed back and forth with just my driver's license.

i call shens

Nope. I'm serious. It might have been 2002 but it was definitely after 911.

The Americans weren't very happy about it but the Canadians didn't really care.

I had to quit working as a border patrol agent after 9-11 when the tips and bribes for overlooking such things fell off. Why it was getting so I could barely make $500./day in "extra" money, so I quit and went to work at the McDonalds in town...I don't get paid as much, but I deal with a lot less self-important assholes who think they are exempt from the rules...and if they bitch too much here, I put rubberbands between the meat and cheese...<SNAP> 😉

It could have happened, customs guards might slack off sometimes.

I got in recently with only my drivers liscence....Game 4 of the Buffalo/Carolina series to be exact.

If you're getting through with only a DL, then the customs officials aren't doing their jobs. Regardless, all official info specifically states what documents/ID you need, and none of it lists DL as an acceptable form of ID by itself. Everyone should enter customs with the expectation that they'll be asked to produce the proper identification.

according to the same website you just linked from:
Entry of Citizens of Canada

Citizens of Canada are exempt from the visa and passport requirement of Immigration and Nationality Act (section 212(a)(7).) To enter the United States, a Canadian citizen must be able to establish both identity and citizenship. Documents that may establish citizenship are:

* Birth certificate
* Citizenship certificate
* Passport.

Although a CBP officer may accept an oral declaration of citizenship, it is recommended that a Canadian citizen carry a document that establishes citizenship. Under current procedures, all travelers may be required to present photo-identification.

NOTE: A Canadian citizen arriving from outside the Western Hemisphere is required to present a passport. Canadian citizens classified as Treaty Trader, Treaty Investor, or Fiancé(e) require a visa.

I've did the same thing several times on my way to Buffalo to visit some friends. Two times I wasn't even asked for my DL. Just a few questions and off I went. Of course I had a copy of my birth certificate just incase.

Okay, I guess technically I'm a Canadian citizen (since I have a Canadian passport), but I've been living in the US for almost 7 years and have had a US-issued Green Card for over six.

I am going to Ontario this weekend. What do I need to get in, and back?

Your Canadian passport.

You also might need your green card.

So I was working a station at the pacific border crossing just south of Vancouver when some kid comes through the line with every form of identification EXCEPT any of the ones we specifically require. We need a birth certificate or a passport, but this guy presents his driver's license, health insurance card, student ID, fishing license, and library card.

I explain that we need one of the two aforementioned forms of identification, and he goes into some rage about how he's being profiled because he's brown. His brother actually had the proper identification so, naturally, he was allowed through. I tried to reason that if I was racially profiling, his brother would be having a difficult time, too. Instead of keying in to this valid point, he instead demands that he be allowed to use his brother's ID since they have the same address.

Are you kidding me, Mohammad?

I try to explain to the kid that EVERYONE needs THEIR OWN identification, but he just gets more and more pissed off (I think he had real temper issues).

In a last-ditch effort, he starts rambling about how his mom is white and is in a mixed marriage and he's not a xenophobic something-or-other like I am.

I don't know what that last bit was all about, but I told him to get back in his Volkswagon with the other 11 illegal Mexicans he tried to border-hop with and go back to Canada.

Lol, not bad... but WTF @ the bolded part.
