Working @ UPS: Week 1

Due to this thread I decided to apply at UPS. A few days later I got to tour the factory, or hub as they call it. I was impressed and went through the rest of the interview process. I finally got selected and started on Monday. The shift is from 6:15 or so to 10:15 or so... sometimes later, sometimes earlier. The starting pay is 8.50/hour. After 90 days you get a 50 cent raise and then a dollar a year from that point on. First impressions on day 1.... this job isn't easy. I live in Florida so it's hot. There is no AC. But, its not hard. I was expecting worse. I dropped 6 lbs in 4 days. Mostly water weight I suppose but still... thats quite a bit. Not only is it a physical job, but its very mental. You have to do around 5 things at once all while its 100+ degrees inside the truck. My mind tends to shut down at 90 degrees. My boss and coworkers are really fun to work with and I think this is one of the best college jobs. Say you are in college for 5 years. By your 5th year you are making 14 bucks an hour and you should be eligible to drive if you wanted. Drivers make great money. Overall, the reason I left my cushy 12+ bucks an hour full time job was to get back into shape and I think I went to the right place. At 19 years of age, I don't need to worry about making the most money at a job.

Glad you like it. Good you started early - wait until summer hits. 105+ degrees outside, so it's like 170 inside the trailers. Your @$$ will sweat like no other. What you're feeling now is nothing compared to the summer.

UPS was my favorite job. I worked at BWI Airport so it was easy. All I had to do was sort packages for an hour then go stand by a scale and call in weights for the plane. I miss that job!!!

I have been working for UPS for 6 months now, don't over due yourself trying to impress the supervisors. Remember its all based on seniority, how hard you work isn't going to be much a factor in being promoted faster. The guy thats been there for 1 month longer and works half as hard will be promoted before you. And don't get hurt, suddenly the really nice boss turns into an a-hole if you need to take a day off from work. This company is a good company, but the management style is horrible.

This is not true. Actually if you take this postition you will be stuck in the seniority cycle. I was a good employee and got promoted fairly quickly. About six months. And managment is where you want to be. UPS treats their employees great. Catered meetings every Thursday, bonuses, more stuff then I can mention. Work hard and you will be rewarded. Sometimes I wish I didn't leave.

how many soccer games go on with our packages ?

Dude I totally lost it and was bawling with laughter here at work.

So true though.

I worked part-time at UPS for close to two years. It was the hardest job I ever had. I started out loading trucks. That job really sucked. Then I moved up to sorting packages. That was a little easier but still very hard work. They worked us like dogs. We had packages come down a conveyor belt and we had to sort them, and they always fed us way too many packages. The things would start piling up until we were literally knee deep in packages, but the bastards never wanted to stop the conveyor belt.

Then there were the big ass, heavy packages like car bumpers. Sort enough of those and your back really starts to feel it. At first I was all gung-ho and they loved me because I was the fastest sorter there. But the other guys would get pissed at me for working too hard. After a while I realized that it wasn't worth it to bust my ass too much, cause the bosses just took advantage and tried to work you even harder. And I wasn't trying to make a career with UPS, just earning some money for school at the time.

I applied, but they didn't need anybody for the shift I wanted.

🙁

BTW, $14 an hour really isn't very much. I would be seriously pissed if I worked 5 years at one job & was only making $14/hr.

The benefits, however, are impressive. So's the workout, which is one of the biggest reasons I wanted the job.

Damn.. maybe I should look into UPS!

Right now, I'm guaranteed a job at Ikea, and the benefits there are quite nice. Does UPS offer tuition assistance? That's one of the main reasons I'm heading to Ikea..

Yes they do... they have an incredible tuition assistance plan BUT, you either have to be a manager or have to be in a location where they have a hard time filling positions... i.e. jacksonville.

I think the majority of horror, slave-driving stories you hear about UPS come from hubs that get killed with packages. All the kids I work with love it there.

I'm sure in California 14 bucks in hour isn't that great, same in NY...But in Tallahassee, FL being a student at FSU, you can't get much better. A dollar a year isn't that great, but it could be worse. But yes, the benefits make up a good chunk of the pay. They offer full health, dental and vision to PART TIME PEOPLE... i've never heard of that before.

come back and say this after 6 weeks, I bet you will have a different opinion by then

After a while I realized that it wasn't worth it to bust my ass too much, cause the bosses just took advantage and tried to work you even harder.

This is the most honest phrase about UPS. Believe us when we say this. Some days you will have good days, but the majority of them are terrible, you will see.

The benefits are awesome, but you have to agree that you work your ass off for them.
