Anyone ever replace a tuner in a tv? The one in the tv in my bedroom seems to be bad. I used to jiggle the cable at the tuner and my picture would come back on. Then it stopped working altogether. I pulled the back off the tv (I know about the high voltages) and gave the tuner a good tap and the picture came back on. But the picture alternates between color/bw. It probably cheaper to buy a tv than have one repaired.
It's a 27" Bell & Howell manufactured in 1993. There is no model number on it, I believe is made by Zenith.

Go buy a new tv and trash that one.

Seriously. That tuner could cost a hundred bucks and you would still have a ten year old TV.

Tuners are (usually) fairly easy to replace, the problem is finding one to replace it with.

Probably your best bet is to pull the tuner, take it to an electronic supply place, and see if they can order one for you. They might/should be able to look it up and order a direct replacement, or a suitable cross-match. Worse case, they may be able to send it out for a rebuild ... depending on the actual type / style / construction.

A regular repair place will (usually) not sell you the parts; they don't make their money on parts inventory, they make their money on the service charges.

A tuner (new), I believe, should be in the neighborhood of ~US$125.00, maybe less.

Good Luck, watch out for the CRT & HV transformer .... some painful volts in there just waiting to getcha.

It sounds like a loose connection, not a "bad" tuner that cannot be repaired. If you can solder, I bet you can fix it yourself. Just stay away from the back of the tube, the big fat wire running from the side of the tube down to the flyback transformer, and the transformer itself.
