So far this is what I have come up with (and thanks the video card help)

Case Antec 1050B $115
MB MSI Neo4 Platinum $110
CPU AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939 $120
Memory 2x 1 GB PC3200 Non-ECC $137
DVD NEC 16x DVD +/- RW $40
Video Card ATi x1800 w/256 MB $250
Hard drive Maxtor Diamondmax 10, 160GB S-ATA 2 (may get 2 and raid them) $50 each

Running total: $872

All advice welcome. Better price to performance breakpoints? Intel/Nvidia instead?
Pricing is approximate online and can probably go down with more searching.
Also the video card pricing is making me wince, is there something that I can pick up in the $150-$200 range that will work through 2-3 cycles?

If you are just looking for a midrange card, an nvidia 6800gs has gotten
good reviews and can be found for around $200. I'm not sure what the
equivalent for an ATI would be, I haven't had an ATI since my 9000pro.
 
The new NEC DVDRW drives have had lots of problems - try looking at another brand like Benq or Lite-On or whatever.

Depending on your gaming preferences, an Nvidia 7600gs (sub $150) or 7600gt (sub $200) would be better than the 6800gs.

Until the x1800gto drops a little in price, ATI doesn't really have an alternative right now that suports SM 3.
