Working on making a 2405FPW Review

I'm working on making a pretty in depth review (although not necessarily highly technical as I'm probably not going to be able to test real response time like AT does, but hoping to make something kinda special and unique so that it helps people).

One thing I thought I'd add is maybe see how many of the people who have gotten theirs have had any issues, like dead/stuck pixels or backlight problems or anything. It'd probably be helpful to maybe have a similar thing for the 2001 and 2005 owners for comparison's sake.

Any ideas or anything would be appreciated and pictures or anything that you can contribute would be helpful as well. I'll make sure and give credit for those who help.

I know I'll need someone to test how well HDTV does on it as I won't be able to.

I'm gonna probably even be able to compare it side by side to the Apple 23" Cinema Displays, so that will probably be helpful.

Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see or anything. I'm gonna try to make it professional and as helpful as possible. Might even setup some video of them in action, so maybe can see if ghosting is more noticeable or something, or even just to see if you can see the BIOS screen when the boot.

Oh and also input from people using all kinds of different video cards will be helpful. I'm currently using an ATi card, and will be using an nVidia one here later this week, but I'd also like to see how older cards, and Matrox and any other card does with them if possible.

Oh, and also, keep badgering me about it so that I'll keep at it. I hope I don't take too long to do it either, as the sooner its out the more helpful it'll be.

How long can a component cable be without signal degradation? I have HD service from cox but the box is in the livingroom, to connect it to the 2405 the cable would be around 20 feet  and the SQ concern may be secondary to the cost of the cable.

Well, I see that component cables are sold in almost any length you want and a 25 foot cable can be had for $20 to $50

Excellent idea. I currently have a 2001FP that has been great to me. But once I get out of school in may and have a full time job in a few months the 2405 will be of high interest to me.

I unpacked and installed two today; one at work and one for me :) . No issues immediately noticeable on either (work screen is run through vga and home is run through dvi on a geforce 6800 nu); no dead pixels (phew) and backlighting is quite even. Movies look great; haven't connected xbox to it through component but.. so far.. this is amazing. Feel free to ask questions; I'm happy to contribute.

I dunno about you guys but I'd love to see side-by-side pics of a 2001FP, 2005FPW and 2405FPW.

I don't think I've yet seen such a comparison in a single pic, but I have seen a pic of a 2001FP and 2005FPW side by side, and another pic of a 2005FPW and 2405FPW side by side. I can probably dig them up if you want.

Yep I've seen the first pic (2001 next to 2005) but it would be nice to get all 3.

2405 in the center flagged by a 2001 and 2005 on each side.

Yeah, that would be nice. Not sure who would have the money to have all three at once though. Or if not money...credit card debt *cough cough* ;)

The current 2405FPW for $860 deal is very very tempting, but I'm still working on paying off my CC balance as it is, and I just got a 2005FPW two months ago. Bah...

I'm guessing 2405 would be as high as the 2001FP but the fact is that it's really looooooooooooooonger :D
Anyway 2005FPW is really nice too, but height of that monitor was an issue to me.
I mean 20'' widescreen provide the height of an 17-18'' LCD. That's an issue for me. That's why I like my 4:3 2001FP height. 2405 though is monsterous!!

Not good news for those waiting on my review. Next week I have 6 tests.

I'll try to get a rough basic fundamental one up though, as that will at least be helpful.

Let me see if I can't work something out and get a pic with all 3 next to each other (I sold my 2001 to a friend, and my 2005 to a co-worker).

I have had a 2001FP, and currently own a 2005FPW, and 2405FPW, as well as a 57" WS Hitachi HDTV right beside my PC. I have done some tests myself. :)

Id like to compare these two LCD's in Farcry and HL2, but I dont have a demo of either of the latest build of the game. :(

If someone wants to photochop a pic, I have a pic of my old 2001FP, and my current 2005FPW side by side. Someone could make a 2001FP, 2005FP, and 2405FP side by side by side pic.

edit, here is a pic of all three beauties.

Please feel free to use any of mine (sorry for the mess, was trying to clear space on a very small desk to they can't be placed side by side for comparison shots)

In the box; removed from plastic bag; bill and cd placed for reference

Next to my 19"; plastic screen cover still on the 24"

Same as above; no flash; bill placed for reference

Same as above; but with flash

Ready to go

Other details:
1 dead / stuck (difference? i don't know; it appears gray when i have completely white background using Dead Pixel Buddy)

Video connection - NVidia Geforce 256 via DVI, 1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz (Yeah, you read that correct: DVI and native resolution on old school original Geforce 256 with 32 MB ram circa 2000 A.D.; i remember the year because it was a graduation present). see here.

I know today's games will have me bent over, spanking me, and yelling "thank you sir may i have another" as i play at 2.3 frames / sec; so i do plan on upgrading the video card. just gotta pay off this huge bitch first :)

I do have some strange horizontal "dashes" when i play some videos full screen (but they are not there when playing in maximized window). this was also a problem for a time on the 19" and i fixed it somehow but for the life of me can't remember what the fix was.

Enjoy! (Questions? Comments? Concerns?)

*edit* image links fixed, i think.

Anyone having an issue with Component video, wavy lines in the top third of the screen, especially on menus (DVD Menus)?

It is bothersome...

If the pixel in question looks grey, your green subpixel might be dead. try running a pure red, pure blue, and pure green screen to make sure.

Anyone have 2x 24" LCD side by side? :D

In terms of actual screen size, the 2001FP is 12" high by 16" wide. The 2405FP is 12.72" high by 20.35" wide.

WOW...I don't think I've ever wanted a LCD till I viewed the side by side pics of the 2405 and 2001. Oh I really wanted the 30" apple when I saw that too :p

Hey thats my room. HA HA

Ah there have been so many monitors on that desk....

First were the the dual Samsung 191T's link

Then the dual 2001Fp's link

then the 2405 + 2001
link

and now all i have is a single lonely 2405 and a 2001FP in a box in the corner of my room.

I do not reccomend using a 2405 and a 2001 together it ended up kinking my neck since one was wider then the other.

I also don't really reccomend dual 2001Fp;s you have to sit to far away from the monitor.

My favorite dual monitor set up so far, is the dual 19" lcd and with the 1905s for $310 would be my set up of choice, if the 2405 hadn't been invented. ITS AMAZING, the first time in my life i have been content with a single monitor. ITS THE BEST MONITOR I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. (though i haven't laid my eyes on a apple 30" yet)

In case you want to note, I had an SGI 1600SW and got used to widescreen montitors for a couple years. When I heard of Dells 2005FPW, I made the switch to the larger size.

So far I am loving this monitor.

I just got a call from Dell regarding the buzzing that some people (including me) have reported on their 2405FPWs. The buzzing is most noticeable near the power plug. Dell wants to capture the monitors that have the buzzing and test them in their engineering lab in Austin.
