Working on commision...

I'm in the process of buying a new laptop (you might have noticed my posts the last few days) and called up Dell the other day and started talking with a Small Biz rep. He seemed like a nice guy and seemed to be cutting me some deals, even better than the prices I was getting on my corporate plan.

Anyway, I was ready to order today if the price was right... he quoted me a price and I said I needed something lower. So he says "Ok, lemme go talk to my manager and see if I can't get $50 off that... but I'm only going to do it if you can tell me right here and now that you'd buy the laptop" So I thought about it and said "Ok" as it was cheaper than what dell has been listing for the last few deal with coupons, etc. Well he comes back and says, "Ok, I got your the extra $50 off. I have a meeting, but I'll call you right back and finish the deal."

Anyway, I hung up and low and behold, Dell's price on their site is lower than yesterday. In fact, it's the EXACT same price this guy quoted me. I know that he is a salesman and is out to make a living, but I don't appreciate him saying "Ok, I'm getting you a deal, but only if you agree to buy it from me." I also know that salesman make these claims all the time and are really just out to make a buck.

At this point, I'm thinking about saying that the deal is off and just placing it online. It's sad really, as he only makes commision if he makes the sale...

btw, Before you say anything, this is a purchase for the company I work for, which spends in excess of $50,000 on new computers each year. It's not like I'm trying to dicker around over one system and will never buy again. It's the principal of the thing, I call you so you can get the comission and you give me a deal because I'm bring that $50k of business to you.

Is that reasonable?

Dell phone sales sucks, I have found that you can ALWAYS get a better deal online.

Plus in addition to coupons (they don't normally disclose to you) you can save another 3% with F@tC@sh or 2% eBates.com

i probably would have worded it better...if he's working on commission his best bet is to be honest as to what he's giving you...

Exactly, I've always gotten better prices over the phone even after rebates/coupons. You just have to be persistant and have a good repore with your rep. This guy isn't my usual rep that deal with, as Jeremy (my rep) is on vacation.

Rossman, thanks for the reminder about Fatcash, I completely forgot about it.

You're welcome, have never used them since I'm so used to being eBates.com's bitch.

- Why should he bother working for you if you aren't willing to commit? Do YOU work for free? If your boss walked into your office today and said, "Hey, we MAY pay you this month but only if we feel like it," would you stay?
- What is your word worth if you don't keep your commitments? You agreed to the price, keep your word.

The price of computer equipment is very volatile and generally in a downward direction. The sales rep offered you a price, one which you agreed to and committed to, and now you want to back out because the deal, while still very good, is not quite as good as you hoped. If you have any character, you will contact that CSR and discuss the issue with him. He may have been unaware of it. In fact, I believe that he probably didn't because if he did, he would have closed the deal right then.

ok...here is a saleman' POV (I have been on commision for 5 years now)...its always best to be upfront and honest, but sometimes you have to pull some tricks out..and the old "if i were to do this, would you buy it?" is the best and most well known closing line ever...him knocking it down to the internet price makes sense, since he was probably justifying dropping his price (breaking policy) and he needed something to pricematch against...this guy was probably new and didnt know how to close a sale without sounding like a used car salesman...whats that dilbert quote?? something the perfect sale is just like the perfect wedgie....you shouldnt see it coming

Ok, I called him up and left him a message letting him know about the online price. He took another $30 off the price and I called it good. I figure he spent the time to work with me and really it wasnt worth all the problems to keep fighting with him over it.

btw, anyone want to buy a Palm Zire? :D
