In South Carolina, a 46-year-old black woman has been arrested for letting her daughter play in a nearby park while trying to earn a living. "The mother, Debra Harrell, has been booked for unlawful conduct towards a child," a local TV station reports. "The incident report goes into great detail, even saying the mother confessed to leaving her nine-year-old daughter at a park while she went to work."

Man, we played by ourselves all the time when I was a kid.

I'll bet that the parent who called the cops on the little black child was an uptight cracka.

i used to play outside away from my *gasp* parents when i was 9...

its called independence, perhaps if we coddle children the world will be a better place. especially when your 40 year old child lives with you with his wife and kids.

im reaching of course... and im almost there.

This unrealistic action will only societally set this mom and child further behind. You can't work while being in jail and foster care will only stigmatize the girl. Both are being caused unnecessary distress by a screwed up system.

Wow what a world we live in. I used to walk home from school starting from first grade, and it took me about an hour to get home. No cops ever pulled me over.

We wonder why some people just give up working and live on welfare.

Pity the mother and child weren't from Guatemala.

Had they been, the mother could have sent her daughter off alone on a 1200 mile trip to the US border.

And not only would that have been okay with the US government. The President is working to get billions of dollars for those 'unaccompanied' children.

Billions for "unaccompanied" alien children. Nothing for "unaccompanied" US children.

Brave new world indeed!

9 years old is plenty old enough to play alone. Someone needs an ass-kicking here.

This is pure BS. What has the world come to when a 9 year old can't play in the park without a parent being present.

When I was 9-10 years old I would walk from my house to town to spend my $2 allowance on cool stuff and candy (model car was a $1, spray paint 50 cents, glue was a quarter, you could get a handful of candy with the last quarter).

its one thing if the kid was at their house...its another thing to be in a public park. still, i think some slack should be given.

yep then you put the car together dump glue all over it and use the paint can as a torch to burn the car and then push it down the road on fire....

Seems like a very strange comparison. It sounds like this was the result of a single cops judgement.

The plastic models would get airborne due to being so light and do some wild looptydoos while still being driven by the rocket engine. Luckily the engine would only last 20 to 30 seconds.

My mom would have had to have tie me to my bedpost to keep me away from the creek at the park I use to go to by my self starting at the age of 4. Kids are nothing but a ball of fat waiting for their future insulin shots these days. Somehow I survived my childhood without a helmut, playing on metal jungle gyms, and riding bikes.

No moms these days would rather their kids be in eyeshot, phoneshot, you name it. Anything to keep any possible danger or the all powerful rape monster away. The world is way more dangerous than it used to be you know.
Phew! Ok, I'm done with my rant.

Analogy not a comparison. Misplaced government priorities at national and local levels have different symptoms but similar causes...

I think the issue is that there wasn't a responsible parent available - she was at work, not at home. Though, it doesn't say where she worked. If she worked a few blocks from the park, and her employer didn't have an issue with the kid popping in if there were some sort of problem, then I don't see an issue. But, if she dropped the kid off and then went to work 10 miles away... even though the kid is playing independently, there should still be someone responsible available, somewhere, for the kid.

At that age, I was going fishing with my younger brother, with friends, or alone. That meant I took my shoes off and waded into the river up to my waist, half a mile from my home. I rode my bike to my cousins house to play with them - 8 miles away. The local Amish kids, around 10 years old, often run their parents' greenhouses - calculating tax and change, by hand, and properly charging the customers. I just bought a basket made by an Amish kid - 8 years old, and it's as nice of a hand made basket as I've ever seen. Meanwhile, we have nanny parents and nanny legislators who think all kids that age should be incompetent at anything but sitting in front of the television playing an xbox. Sadly, had that mother done that, rather than let her kid get exercise, she probably wouldn't have been caught/gotten in trouble.
