Working in my office is a shocking experience

I swear, every time I get out of my chair at work, as soon as I come near something metal...*ZAP!*. Anybody know of a way to permanently ground yourself, or some other way to stop (or at least limit) this?

The odd part is that it doesn't seem to happen to everybody, at least not nearly as often. They all think it's funny, but it gets annoying after a while.

I don't know, but I always get a horrible shock when I get out of my car. Nobody else in my car does. God hates us?

That's probably it 😛

just get one of those grounding wrist straps that some people buy for building computers. whenever you sit down hook the clamp to something metal.

Yup I get a shock EVERY SINGLE FRIGGEN TIME I exit my car. It's weird because it only happens in my car, and it only started happening a couple of months ago. Yeah, it's annoying as hell :|

If it's winter and cold where you live, usually also means it's very dry which causes more static. Have them turn up the humidity.

I used to have this problem. Then I changed tires and the problem went away. It was worse in the winter, too.

That's interesting, I recently had to replace a tyre that had a nasty puncture. I'm not 100% sure if that's when the problem started but maybe I'll try putting the spare on and see what happens.

car shock issues could be internal grounding errors, especially if you have an aftermarket stereo installed.

I used to have this problem. Go the the store and buy a can of "Static Guard" and spray your seat. The problem went away immediately. I imagine that it would work on your chair at work as well.

Touch the metallic surface of your car (roof, door, whatever) when you exit and you won't get shocked.

Do you have a seat cover on driver's seat, different than the rest? This could create static electricity... friction with the stick shifter, the wheel?
As for the original poster, the grounding wrist strap could be one solution. Does your display (the face of the CRT) is getting electrostatically charged? (move your hand, palm to your face, near the screen. Does the hair on your hand get attracted to the screen?)
Maybe your pants/shirt/sweater get static electricity from contact with your chair

A good way to make it less painful is to touch something that you think might be grounded with your elbow or the back of your hand BEFORE you use your fingers.

yes I think this works. another advice I've heard is to touch a grounded object (well really it doesn't have to be well grounded to absorb charges) with a metal object that you hold eg your keys. when it's dry in the office, I always touch the door knobs with my watch (steel) first. the metal distributes the current so you don't feel a thing.

but in your case since the object causing the static is known, i would give lightpants's advice a try.
