so I heard that working at the post office is a really good deal apparently. I heard that In my area, a post office worker gets starting salary 50k+.

Is that true?

I read that all they have to do is pass some exams and then once they get hired, they are good to go. anybody have any experience at working at the post office? What type of work do people have to do at the post office that deserves such a high salary? Is it just the front desk people?

anybody have any experience working in post office? advantages and disadvantages??

I'm happy with my job now, but it is seriously something to consider if my job ever kicks the can...
 
It's not all that easy to get in down in the states. You have to take the civil service test, which is only given when they need new employees. Then you generally have to do "casual" work, which is just subbing for a while, then part-time, then you become full-time. There's a LOT of limitations on hiring new people because of the unions that they have.

Up here in Canada it's pretty much the same, except that they hire casuals every year at Christmas, so it's easier to get hired in the first place. Still, be prepared to spend a few years working at it before you get full-time.

My father worked as a mail carrier, the regular pay is indeed not that much. However, as you get more senior, more overtime opens up. At one time, he was making about 4.5~5k a month, however, that was a huuuge amount of overtime. No such thing as easy money, especially not civil service.

Where do you think "go postal" came from? A coworker of mine used to work at the post office, and she took a significant cut in pay and benefits to come to where I work now (and this is also a government office). While we're both now looking for work, and she's only 2-3 years away from retirement, she says she'd rather flip burgers for a living than ever go back to the post office -- and this is one of the brightest, most organized women I've ever met in my life.
 
From what I see at my local PO, you must have to be virtually unemployable in the private sector to be considered for Postal Service duty. 🙂

J/K, I have seen some top notch people in some POs.
 
As Newman said very anxiously, "Because it never stops. It keeps coming and coming." I can see why most postal workers hate their job. They are often overworked and it seems to be very unrewarding. Working as a dishwasher I can relate as the dishes never stop even when you close it up, more come. Of course it can be rewarding to do a good job, but that feeling gets old fast. Please note I am not a 52 year old man working as a dishwasher. I am 18.

If you can handle (or thrive on) routine, and never want to learn anything or advance to anywhere worthwhile, get a government job (particularly one at the post office). Yeah, there are some that are better than others, but <shrug>.

When I took the job I have now, I did because the gov't pays more than private, for similar fields... now I know why. /me can't stand the routine and never-changing political bs that prohibits you from ever learning or advancing 😀
