Working at Circuit City - is it worth it?

I've been out of work for a while.. My last job paid over $30 an hour but I'm content with the fact that the job market just sucks right now.. I live at home but just want to pick up a job for spending money (I HATE asking my parents for $$$) - is working at circuit city for a sales job really worth it? I've heard that the pay is like 7.50 an hour... I could only work for like 10/hr a week since I go to school - will the take home pay be even $50? Another factor- is the employee discount good or not? What I don't understand is how people with families can work there- $7.50x40 doesn't equal a lot of take home pay, yet a few people that work in the local one are above 30 years old and seems rather smart (not like the idiots who work at convenience stores) -am I missing something??

Well, they used to be paid on commission, which was ok. I used to work at the GG, they pay base $10.00, but I made over 30K my first and only year working for them. CC recently changed their sale tactic and is no longer commission base, which explain the influx of not giving a hoot about customer service sales people. For $7.50/hr, you can find a better job, one that won't even require you to work on weekends... If I was out of work, and want to work for an E retailer, I'd look for the "higher end" places, they pay better and customers don't look at you like you're an idiot.

C CIty just switched up things a year or so ago. THey used to be commission and the people with families made 35k and above. Those guys were huslters. Now its an hourly wage and a lot of people left the company because of that, wouldnt you. The one in Dallas pays about 9-11 dollars an hour. Still not enough for someone with a family, but i guess you dont have to worry about that. As fas as the employee discount,
nice-i constantly was spending my money in there. If you are living with moms and pops, you should have no probs

well some of them do make more than 7.50 an hour - sales makes a good 9, depending on where you are in the country.

it all depends. i liked working at circuit city but i was going nuts working 45 hours a week in one place and then all day on the weekend at CC.

good luck getting 10 hours a week - most places want 15. the take home pay isn't that bad - i worked about 20 some odd hours a week for a while, getting 200ish every two weeks.

yes the discount is awesome - *hugs big screen tv and 32" wega at home in my parents house* and definitely worth the asses that kept harassing me for discounts and returning things after a year. (i was a csa.)

being that its more of a stopgap job for you, i don't know if CC will hire you unless they're desperate because you might just wind up leaving in two months when you find something better.

the only thing i wasn't a fan of was selling the extended warranty - yes even the csa's had to sell it to you. but as a salesman you might have a lot better chance of selling it because of the items you are selling, compared to someone who picks up a 20 dollar cd player and asking them to buy a 14 dollar warranty at the register.

Do they still make commission for those extended warranties? Customer service has gone down but they still push those warranties

I used to work in the install bay almost two years ago and was making $9. My old manager called me last week and asked me if I wanted to come in over winter and work the sales floor for $9/hr anytime I'm not in school or my regular job. Seems pretty flexible for me, but I'll admit I can't stand car audio customers sometimes. "Dude, if you hook me up with a cd player and take off like $50 I know a dude downtown who can hook you up with pot if you're into that"

Yes, I had a black guy ask me that once.
