I am just ranting, but right now I am a little pissed.

As IT we have to deal with everyone, and some of the people are so hard to work with. ARGGGGGGGGGGG :|

I need to get out of IT.

**EDIT**
So I have calmed down a bit. But here you go with the situation.

This lady wants the project done immediately, but will not bother spending the time going over specifications. I have been trying to get together with her for the last month. All she does is talk down to me, and then get mad that the thing isn't done yet. I finished it, by talking to a lot of people in the department and different regions (which took me an exorbitant amount of time) to figure out the business needs, and all she had were negative things to say about it when we did a test phase on the project today, and she kept talking down to me. Drove me nuts, especially since my boss was there and she has a knack for adding/promising "functionality" to the program and making it seem like she did a large part of the project (in which case she didn't oversee it at all). So I have to sit there and bear it while cruching the numbers in my head how long it will take to make all of those major changes. <sigh>

Since I deal with so many people, some people are a lot harder to deal with. Most of the time I have dealt with the people well, and I have had a reputation in all the regions for being a pretty amiable guy to deal with, but every once in a while there is someone who comes in who thinks they can just talk down to you the whole time. The sad thing is, as IT you always have to grin and bear it and try to resolve the situation when all you want to do is clobber the person.

Getting out of IT is all too easy to do, these days. There's a programmer somewhere who will do your job 45% as well as you do, for 20% of your pay.

Go to HR ask for their pay for school programs, get your MBA paid for, show your ability to be a manager, pick something else like computer security and manage a small group, etc.

I'm with you. I hate it so much I'm beyond miserable. If I can figure out a way to support my family with a different career, I'm fscking GONE.

I have been in computers since graduation over 10 years ago. In that time, I have worked with some very frustrating people, but it is still a very rewarding job for me.

Yep, interesting catch-22. Hate the job but love the pay. I know where you are coming from.

Meh, I know my way around the IT room just fine. Hell I'm headed to IT as soon as a position opens. However, the jackass IT guys in there now automatically assume that you're a fvcking retard if you're not already in IT. I hate those guys. I'm not ALLOWED to do certain things and it's really not worth risking my job over, so I go to them and say "hey your boss has been asking you for more memory for the two computers in the lab with me for two weeks now. My tasks are severely suffering and sometimes crippling the entire side of production without it (thanks to this new f'tarded software)." They blow me off going "yeah yeah" and completely ignore me and their boss.

"Hey I need you to look at this damn thing because I've got 11 pieces going out and only have 1 CD for software registration. I need to burn 10 more, but my account is locked down so tight I can't troubleshoot it more than restarting. Fix it, damn you!"

"...yeah yeah" *closes the door*

You know what really sucks? If I could go back in time and do it again, I have no freaking clue what I'd change. THAT'S depressing.

I'm miserable and depressed enough with my career that if I only knew what would make me happy, I'd definitely do it.

as much as i would like to at times if i did that or any of my co-workers my boss would rip me a new one. Customer service is #1 around here for both internal and external customers. in fact our VP sends out a survey every quarter to ALL the depts asking how we as a IT dept were doing.

There are only a few jobs on the planet that aren't frustrating and where you don't have to deal with people that cause frustration.

You had a bad day. Tell it like it is. ;)

Sounds like you guys just don't enjoy the work, but that's ok... most don't.

I for one love development, and I derive the most satisfaction from working with others through collaborative efforts. IMO, it's the propensity of most IT people to work in isolation that prevents them from being ultimately successful.

Hope you have a better day DaShen!

I know the attitude you have on here isn't likely the same offline, but you might need to be more political about it. If you try to go in there telling them what's wrong they're going to immediately blow you off.

Develop a rapport with those guys and find a way in. It's a lot about who you know...

I just don't find the work rewarding. More than anything, I'm sick and tired of rotting behind a desk when there are so many beautiful places on this planet. If I was single and without children and going through this frustration, I'd walk into my boss' office, take a big fat steaming sh*t on his desk, point to it and call it my resignation, sell my house and 90% of what was in it, move to Florida, and work on the piers.

I refuse to play mind games, use politics, and the load of the other office antics that many people believe to be the only way to operate. There's a job that needs to be done. Get it done. Simple as that. Quit bitching about this and that, don't whine, stop chatting, quit slacking off. Bust your ass to get the job done. If something else comes up that's a higher priority (say, THE WHOLE of production grinds to a HALT), then get up off your ass and go help; get it done as soon as possible so you can get back to your previous work and get that done.

I have a no-bullshit attitude at work. Work can be fun, but if you're not working, get the hell out of my way so I can.

LOL, I hear ya brother. That represents one of the better rants I've ever read...

Sounds like you just might need a change of pace + scenery. You can more in software than sit behind a desk all day. Maybe seek out some smaller companies that work in interesting environments? Not only is the work rewarding, but you meet a lot of different people, interact in diverse industries, etc.

Have a

Sorry man, that's just not the way the world works. I completely agree with you, but it's an unfortunate reality that businesses are inherently social, and wherever there is a complex social environment you're bound to have politics; you don't have to play it, but you have to work through it. Ignoring it only leaves you behind.

Can't disagree with that, but what I said above still applies.

You might just have a lot of worthless people in your department. It's possible. I try to surround myself with high-quality people that have a "get it done" mentality with an ability to move around in the complex social dynamic of most professional environments.

Some departments consolidate the groups. I am under IT - Data Management in reality. Which is the applications gorup here.
