what are the real bennifits in a 3 computer home setup of one over the other, i cant decide, there is my computer where i work in photoshop,illustrator, avid, etc and then there is my parents where they mainly search the web, check email, and use office, then there is the guest computer for multiplayer games, my "server" will run apache to host video for my website, run my ftp, and run backup
 
A Domain would require a server OS dedicated to function as a domain controller and another computer if you plan on the 3 computers being workstations.

Workgroup you already have everything you need. Samba on the linux box for sharing with Windows.

I personally use a domain setup for the 4 or so computers I have for control over them and to learn the server OS.
