Workgroup issue

OK it's been a while since i messed around with networking stuff, but how do i get my workgroup to see another workgroup that has been added to the network in the house? I know the cabling and all is good, and the new machines have internet access throu the router that the original workgroup is on.

I just can't get the new workgroup to show up.

The O/S in use would be real helpful.

I don't think 98 or ME will allow you to access multiple workgroups, and it's my guess that XP-Home won't either, though I haven't tried it. Why not make them all one workgroup?

sorry, it's XP pro. Well my existing network is set up already, and the new machines are from another house and the owner of them being a tard has the drives all mapped out to share files, and is to stubborn to change so i can't change his workgroup cause all his drives would need to be remapped and since he maps FOLDERS :| instead of drives, there's that much more pain in my butt. I'm prob gonna tell him tough shat said the cat.

Type \\WORKGROUPNAME

or when you go to "my network Places," ther should be a little icon on the left that says view workgroup computers.


Once that finishes loading up, there should be an other icon titled "View entire network" that should take the last icons place. Click it and you should see all available networks.

The "manual way" of getting this browse list is through a command window:

For WinNT, Win2K,WinXP computers type:

net view /domain:<workgroupname>

For Win95,98,Me and WFW type:

net view /workgroup:<workgroupname>

What is the response when you try to view the remode workgroup using the appropriate command from above?

If you get no response, try adding all of the other workgroups ip,computername combos into your local lmhosts files.

None of your ideas are working yet. thou it's looking more and more like it's a config problem on his side. as i tested my machine at another site and it saw multiple workgroups fine.

How do you browse multiple workgroups with W98?

from a dos prompt type:

net view /domain:<workgroupname>


There is no way to "view" more than one workgroup at a time (on win98 or win 2000 or win whatever...).

The operative word was browse in my query. You can connect at the command line, but with 2K/XP, you can browse multiple workgroups. It's very awkward to work with multiple workgroups with W98 unless you map to fixed resources.
